I CAN’T FEEL MY BABY MOVE- IS MY BABY ASLEEP IN UTERO?

Its important that once quickening which is the first baby movement a mum feels during pregnancy starts, it should not stop or slow down

At least you should feel your baby move every day

Mums should be familiar with how their babies move and if there is any significant change report immediately.

Your baby’s fetal movement should not slow down or become excessive.

If you cant feel it at all kindly report to the hospital.

Never assume its because your baby is sleeping!

Your baby’s movement can start between 16 to 22 weeks of pregnancy. It can be earlier for mums who have given birth before.

Other factors may affect how you feel the baby’s movement. But do report if it slows down or becomes excessive

Excessive baby movement or decrease in baby’s movement pattern could be a sign that baby is in distress.

Don’t leave your pregnancy to chance!

CAN I GET PREGNANT SIX MONTHS AFTER CESAREAN SECTION?

Whilst practicing as a midwife , I have met many women who have been faced with the challenge of whether to get pregnant immediately after a cesarean section. Let’s go straight into it .

It’s advisable to wait for a period of two years after a cesarean section before conceiving. This allows you to heal properly .
Pregnancy after a short duration of cesarean section has risk. One of the main risk factors is uterine rapture.

Uterine rapture usually occurs when the woman goes into labor and the site of the previous cesarean section is not properly healed. The tear usually occurs through the past scar due to strong contractions.

This can be stopped or managed if the woman is closely monitored and her birth planned. She also has to cooperate with her doctor for the best outcome. If you were scheduled for cesarean section, do not stay home when you realise labor has started and you are contracting.

And also remember spacing the babies have lots of benefits for both mum and baby .

It’s also advisable to see a gynaecologist for the best advice specific to your situation. Remember every woman is different

Let me add that if you found your self pregnant before the time allowed by your health care provider, just remember it can be managed and you will still have a successful pregnancy and a healthy baby if you are well monitored.

FALSE PREGNANCY

YOU CAN LOOK PREGNANT BUT NOT PREGNANT – FALSE PREGNANCY

FALSE PREGNANCY
FALSE PREGNANCY

Have you heard many stories of women who say they have been pregnant for years and so on… If yes let’s have this explanation

First of all the most reliable confirmation that you are pregnant is when a heart beat is seen during a scan. There is another method not popularly used

There are so many reasons you could feel or look pregnant but in reality you are not.

Certain health conditions and hormonal imbalance can make you feel tired, sick, nauseated etc. You need to check and confirm pregnancy before concluding it pregnancy.

Also you can have a big abdomen due to abdominal fat, fluid, gas, mass etc

Never conclude you are pregnant because of how you feel or just because you missed a period.

Though some may be harmless some conditions can also need immediate intervention to prevent further complications

And yes I have also heard of stories where women were told they were not pregnant but found out they were actually pregnant later. If you find your self in this situation, seek a second opinion from another facility. Don’t stay home!

WHEN WOMEN BECOME VULNERABLE

WHEN WOMEN BECOME VULNERABLE!!

Moments when I love midwifery practice; when a new baby is born and when I find myself in the centre of issues that affect women .

The worst moments when men who are seen as the family heads and also decision makers take decisions that are detrimental to the well being of their partners.

Calling for the discharge of women who are pregnant and sick against medical advise. These vulnerable , sick and poor women will give in because they actually have to depend on them for everything therefore if the decision will even cause harm to them, they have no say.

Most of these cases come back to our facilities worse of and even causes death for some women. Some men will even pretend to be sending the women to close facilities and keep this vulnerable women at home.

The question I ask myself is it greed, poverty, selfishness, illiteracy or what can make some men so insensitive to the plight of women.

We need change! The life of every woman counts. Men get involved in maternal health , understand our issues and help reduce the needless deaths.

How can a husband or partner keep a woman he loves at home when she is suffering from severe preeclampsia and has been referred to a higher facility. If this woman dies who will be blamed?

We still have a long way to go. Remembering how I helped save a young woman who was very sick and partner wanted to take her to the northern part of the country .After a long and tough deliberation he changed his mind and the life of this young lady was saved.

She could have had serious complications on her way since they were not going with ambulance or any health personnel.

Well after that incidence, similar incidence kept repeating it self and I kept asking my self when will all these end?

When will society place value on the health of women? When will women be empowered enough to take decisions that affect their own reproductive health? Hoping for better days ahead.

Let’s empower our women both economically and psychologically. Yes it’s possible end Maternal deaths.

Pregnant woman sleeping

WHAT IS THE BEST SLEEPING POSITION DURING PREGNANCY- A MUST READ

  • It’s best to assume a comfortable position during pregnancy
  • In your first trimester when your bump is still small. You can sleep on your back
  • As your bump grows and your weight increases you need to assume a position that will be comfortable to you and the baby.
  •  Sleeping on your back is no more recommended once your bump grows and your weight increases especially in your second and third trimester
  • It’s best to sleep on your side. You can sleep either on your right side or the left side. Change positions to make you comfortable when need be.
  • Support your self with enough pillows to make you comfortable
  • Your bed should be firm enough to prevent back ache
  • Sleeping on your back will reduce the blood flow to you and your baby. It can also lead to fainting in the mum. The weight of the baby occludes blood vessels in the abdomen.
  • If you wake to realize you are lying on your back, quickly adjust to sleep on your side

fetal heart beat

AT EVERY VISIT YOUR FETAL HEART SHOULD BE CHECKED!

fetal heart beat
fetal heart beat

She went into labor and decided to report to the hospital.

At the hospital her fetal heart rate was not checked.

Only a vaginal examination was done and she was told dilation has not started she should go back home.

She went home and after a few days she realized her vaginal discharge has increased. She reported back to the hospital.

This time the fetal heart was listened to but it could not be heard.

Induction was done and a still birth was the result.

Lessons… Baby could have been saved if the fetal heart rate was checked to rule out fetal distress.

Even if it had already occurred it will have been seen earlier and baby delivered to prevent further complications it can bring to the mum.

If you are in the first trimester where the fetal heart is not being heard with a fetoscope at least be sure you feel pregnant. Know how you feel. If pregnancy symptoms stops suddenly kindly do report

Every little thing counts

Don’t leave the hospital without you checking on fetal heart

Also make sure your feel baby kicks

Don’t leave your pregnancy to chance.

Breastfeeding

THE SECRET TO SUCCESSFUL BREASTFEEDING-FEED! FEED! FEED!

Breastfeeding
Breastfeeding

One of the commonest concerns of new mums is the flow of breast milk.

The common complaint health workers get is my breastmilk is not flowing, what should I do?

It’s important for every mum to know that before your baby is born, your body is ready to provide food. That’s how amazing God is! Food is ready before the baby comes.
The first breast milk the breast produces is called colostrum and can sometimes be expressed even before birth if breast examination is done for a pregnant woman.

After you have your baby the doctor / #The midwife will put the baby to breast immediately within the first 30 minutes. You don’t need to see breast milk flowing before you do that.

The #The secret here is that the more you breastfeed the more breastmilk is produced. That is how it has been designed.

So if you want to have more breastmilk, feed! feed! and feed! Feed the baby on demand and it should be exclusive.

Once you add #milk substitutes etc, your feeding time reduces and your body assumes that you do not need more. With time your breastmilk supply will reduce because you are not breastfeeding regularly

So the fact is that you need to stay #hydrated and healthy whilst breastfeeding so you take more fluids, soups, drinks and nutritious meals.

But if you don’t give #breastmilk more regularly, it’s of no use. Your supply will cut down since body assumes you don’t need more

#Breastfeeding is an act that has to be learnt and properly done for best results. Seek help from your midwife or lactational consult where needed. If done right the result is always amazing.

It’s nature’s perfect food for your baby!

Involution of the uterus

WHEN WILL I GET A FLAT TUMMY AFTER BIRTH?

Involution of the uterus
Involution of the uterus

It’s important to understand what happened to your body during pregnancy . The uterus enlarged to accommodate the growing baby. Your body retained more fluid and the abdominal muscles was also stretched during pregnancy. It took 9 months…This was a gradual process

In the same way after birth the body will need time to go back to its pre pregnancy state.

And yes the uterus will take about 6 weeks to go back to its original state

Also know it’s not just the uterus. The fluid in the body adds to your weight and looks after birth . The abdominal muscles will be lax and and the fat in your body will also be present. All this adds up to make your abdomen and body look big. Not forgetting the weight you gained during pregnancy

To reduce it. Here are simple things you can do .

Start postnatal Exercise after birth

Breastfeeding helps a lot

And also diet modification is very important . Nutritious meals in adequate proportions.

Some may need some physiotherapy as well

And yes let me add that be gentle and patient with yourself. Yes getting your body back after birth is possible but it takes time and effort

No matter what you are still beautiful! And a great mum. Never forget that!

Speak to your midwife or doctor for possible referral to resources near you! Nutritionist, fitness coach, physiotherapist, post partum birth coach etc

RHESUS INCOMPATIBILITY

RHESUS INCOMPATIBILITY

After your first pregnancy or miscarriage you need to check your rhesus factor. If you are negative and baby is positive you need anti D or Rhogam . This prevents your subsequent pregnancies from complications and possible miscarriages due to incompatibility. Always make sure you check at the hospital if its your first pregnancy or first abortion. Its also needed after a miscarriage if you are rhesus negative.

Let me add that if both father and mother are rhesus negative there is no need for the anti D. Its important for both partners to know their rhesus factor

Speak to your doctor or midwife About your Rhesus factor
