Involution of the uterus

WHEN WILL I GET A FLAT TUMMY AFTER BIRTH?

Involution of the uterus
Involution of the uterus

It’s important to understand what happened to your body during pregnancy . The uterus enlarged to accommodate the growing baby. Your body retained more fluid and the abdominal muscles was also stretched during pregnancy. It took 9 months…This was a gradual process

In the same way after birth the body will need time to go back to its pre pregnancy state.

And yes the uterus will take about 6 weeks to go back to its original state

Also know it’s not just the uterus. The fluid in the body adds to your weight and looks after birth . The abdominal muscles will be lax and and the fat in your body will also be present. All this adds up to make your abdomen and body look big. Not forgetting the weight you gained during pregnancy

To reduce it. Here are simple things you can do .

Start postnatal Exercise after birth

Breastfeeding helps a lot

And also diet modification is very important . Nutritious meals in adequate proportions.

Some may need some physiotherapy as well

And yes let me add that be gentle and patient with yourself. Yes getting your body back after birth is possible but it takes time and effort

No matter what you are still beautiful! And a great mum. Never forget that!

Speak to your midwife or doctor for possible referral to resources near you! Nutritionist, fitness coach, physiotherapist, post partum birth coach etc

Baby Skin Colour

YOUR BABY’S SKIN COLOR AT BIRTH – WHAT DOES IT MEAN?

PINK-The color of your new born baby at birth should be pink. Baby may not need help with breathing at birth.
It shows that baby has enough supply of oxygen to all parts of the body

BLUE-If the palm and feet are blue, it indicates a sign of cyanosis, a sign of reduced oxygen. Cyanosis or reduced oxygen is more severe when the chest region is blue. Baby may need some form of resuscitation.

YELLOW SKIN- Baby is jaundice and will have to be seen immediately to prevent complications. It can also be een in the eyes, nail beds, palm and sole of the feet. Furthermore investigation and Phototherapy will be needed

PALE- If your new born baby looks pale kindly let your midwife or doctor check on the baby too. They may have to check if cord is not bleeding or any other issue is apparent.

Call the attention of your doctor immediately

Report if your baby is blue, pale or yellowish in color.

If your baby is dark in color and you cannot see the pink color, check the palm or the sole of the feet. It should not look pale or bluish.

placenta previa

PLACENTA PREVIA

Hi mums before you go into labor be sure of your placenta location.

In severe cases of placenta previa, vaginal birth is contra indicated

Giving birth vaginally can cause bleeding in grade 3 or grade 4 placenta previa.

In placenta previa , the uterus is located in the lower portion of the uterus and bleeding can occur if the woman gets into labor.

A planned cesarean section may be done and the facility will prepare for any form of possible bleeding

RHESUS INCOMPATIBILITY

RHESUS INCOMPATIBILITY

After your first pregnancy or miscarriage you need to check your rhesus factor. If you are negative and baby is positive you need anti D or Rhogam . This prevents your subsequent pregnancies from complications and possible miscarriages due to incompatibility. Always make sure you check at the hospital if its your first pregnancy or first abortion. Its also needed after a miscarriage if you are rhesus negative.

Let me add that if both father and mother are rhesus negative there is no need for the anti D. Its important for both partners to know their rhesus factor

Speak to your doctor or midwife About your Rhesus factor

BACKACHE DURING PREGNANCY

BACKACHE DURING PREGNANCY

During pregnancy one of the complains women often give is back pain.

One of the reasons for pack ache is the the bones of the pelvis trying to expand to accommodate the growing baby

The pregnancy hormones also allows the joints to be more flexible to aid the expansion

To reduce the back ache

Assume the right posture during all activities

Don’t be in one position for a long time. Walk , sit , sleep etc

Make sure your sleep on a firm bed

Make Exercise part of your daily routine

Massage therapy also helps

If back ache is severe report to the hospital immediately

dilated

WHY DOES YOUR MIDWIFE TELL YOU TO HOLD ON WITH PUSHING EVEN WITH STRONG AND PAINFUL CONTRACTIONS

This is because the cervix which is the opening of the uterus has to open from 0 to 10 cm. At 10 cm the midwife must confirm the cervix is fully dilated. If it is not fully dilated pushing through it will cause cervical tear which may lead to bleeding and other complications.

Let your doctor or midwife confirm dilation first before you start bearing down or pushing

In few cases the mum does not have control baby comes out rapidly.

In all work with your doctor or midwife for the best results

Bladder

A FULL BLADDER DURING LABOR

bladder
bladder

Do you realize that once you are in the active phase of labor, your doctor or midwife will continue to encourage you to empty your bladder.

A cather will be used to drain the urine if bladder is full but the woman is unable to pass the urine

This is because, full bladder may prevent the head of the baby from descending into the pelvis. Contractions may not be so efficient.

After the birth of your baby a full bladder may also prevent the uterus from contracting well and can lead to bleeding.

Cooperate with your doctor or midwife for the best outcome of your pregnancy! 024 228 1957

“I THOUGHT IT WAS BELLY FAT” – BORN TO LIVE!

Please my name is Angela, and I have a child, which is about 11 months old, but recently my tummy grew a little big, and I thought it was belly fat, so I didn’t pay attention to it.

But just this Tuesday, I was experiencing, some abdominal pains, like labor, and yes it was labor, my husband helped me in the house to deliver, because I didn’t know, I was pregnant, and didn’t go to ante-natal, so I delivered in the house ,and the baby is fine, but small.

My 11- month- old baby was breastfeeding, while this baby came, and I didn’t have any signs of pregnancy like, vomiting and so on, all of a sudden just this Tuesday I delivered, pls want u to help me.

Sally… Well I didn’t believe it. Thought it was one of those scammers. I decided to meet them at the hospital and it was so true.

I have heard in foreign news how people never knew they were pregnant but went into labor and delivered.

Wow, as I interviewed her she said she felt so well, never got sick only realized her abdomen was growing a little big.

Her question to me was :How is this possible?

Fact: For some women’s fertility can resume six weeks after birth. Also know that ovulation occurs before your menses.

So whilst you are thinking your menses hasn’t resumed so you can’t get pregnant, you can have surprises if you are very fertile.

I recommend taking a form of family planning at six weeks if you want to space your children. Lactational amenorrhea does not work for everyone!!!

She was breastfeeding! She practiced exclusive breastfeeding but she got pregnant! It doesn’t work for everyone! If you have no experience and are not sure how your body works, just take a form of family planning till your menses resume and make an informed decision.

Baby is being seen at the hospital! We wish her speedy recovery!

Midwife who saw her was shocked and exclaimed : “This baby was born to Live. Surviving without antenatal, Nicu care and all that”
