TURKEY BERRY AND ANEMIA DURING PREGNANCY!!!!

What do you call this in your local dialect? Some names include #AmaJulie or #AnonaNtroba in Fante, #KwahuNsusuwa, #YaaAsantewa, #Beduru, and #Kantosey by the Ga’s.

As a practicing nurse/#midwife. I have some experiences to share. We had a client on the ward whose hemoglobin(HB) level was very low. We needed to boost it so she could go for surgery. She was on #medication for about two week and she was asked to recheck. It improved beyond our expectations and we were wondering what happened. She told us her #mum blends turkey berry and brings to her every morning.
Another client who was pregnant and HB was low decided to add to her meals and blend as well. In a months time. HB was within normal.

Anemia is when your hemoglobin level is low. Below 10g/dl. An average person has HB of 11 to 16 g/dl. Usually higher in men than women due to #menstruation
These #stories made me to search about its benefits and its an amazing plant. It is a rich source of iron, calcium, fiber and #Vitamin A. Iron boost the production of red blood cells, there by improving your hemoglobin level which is necessary for your babies development.
It can be added to stews, soups and blended as well. #Pregnant women and children can benefit if they include this in their diets.

It should not be used to substitute your prescribed #drugs or haematenics. Instead it should be used as a complement.

Don’t mix it with milk. Take separately.

Speak to your nutritionist about it

Also remember to eat well, rest, exercise, and stay healthy during pregnancy.
Talk to your #nutritionist about how you can benefit from this plant.

Also talk to your #doctor first if you are anemic for proper diagnosis and treatment.

THE SECOND STAGE OF LABOR-WHEN THE CERVIX IS FULLY DILATED

The second stage of labor starts when the cervix is fully dilated. In the first stage of labor the cervix is still dilating.

At this stage the mum will be encouraged to bear down since the cervix is fully dilated. The cervix is fully taken up and it cannot cause a cervical tear

The second stage of labor can last between 30 minutes to an hour or two. If it lasts for too long we call it a prolonged second stage of labor.

It can lead to maternal exhaustion, fetal distress and can even result in complications

If prolonged labor occurs an assisted birth or cesarean section will be recommended to prevent further complications

During the second stage of labor

đź”´You will be positioned for delivery

đź”´Push with contractions with the guidance of your midwife

đź”´Rest in between contractions

đź”´Cooperate with your doctor or midwife and communicate how you feel or your needs

The second stage of labor ends when your baby is delivered. This ushers in the third stage of labor which is the delivery of the placenta

Dont leave your pregnancy to chance!!!

CAN PINEAPPLE INDUCE LABOR?

Is it true that pineapple, grapes and citrus fruits induces labor hence they are not good for pregnant women?

Pineapple contains enzyme bromelain. This enzyme is believed to help soften the cervix.

You need to take lots of pineapple to achieve the results expected.

A slice of pineapple in your diet or some citrus fruits is not enough to initiate labor.

My advice is you eat all fruits in moderation.

If you are uncomfortable you can limit its consumption until you are due, but remember it has nutrients that can help you as well

Speak to your doctor or midwife about ways of induction

Pineapple is not enough to initiate labor!

abdomen

DON’T COMPARE THE SIZE OF YOUR ABDOMENTO ANOTHER PERSON’S ABDOMEN

My abdomen is not as big as I expected- 1st pregnancy

This is because it is you first time pregnancy and the abdominal muscles are still tight.

It hasn’t been stretched before. It will not look as big as a mum who has delivered before.

So you don’t have to worry or compare your abdomen to another persons pregnancy

In second or third pregnancies because the abdominal muscle has been stretched before there is already some amount of laxity in the abdominal muscles and so it can grow bigger than that of a first time mum

Also remember other things like fluid, fat or any mass can make the abdomen look bigger.

So you don’t really need a big abdomen to feel all is going well.

Your doctor or midwife will also be checking on your fundal height as well as your scan. This will give your doctor insight on the well being of the baby. If he has not complained that you have intra uterine growth restriction, you should be at ease and enjoy your healthy pregnancy!

baby fetal kick

YOUR BABY’S FETAL KICKS – WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

Once your baby starts moving/kicking , your baby should not stop moving or kicking

Quickening is the first movement of your baby and usually occurs between 16 to 24 weeks of gestation

Always pay close attention to the movement of the baby

At least once in a day get a quiet place and time to pay attention to your baby’s movement

Be familiar with it.

Report if baby’s fetal kicks have slowed or excessive!

Don’t assume your baby is asleep!

If you have doubts just call your doctor or midwife.

He may listen to the fetal heart rate with a doppler, request a scan or do further investigations

Your normal fetal heart rate is between 120 to 160 bpm.
