HAVING A CESAREAN SECTION DOES NOT MAKE YOU LESS OF A WOMAN!

Midwife Sally.. “I have done two cesarean sections but the third one I want to try is a vaginal birth.”

Well I explained to her the risk and why the need for a planned cesarean section.

“Midwife Sally, what about the fact that people do not appreciate it if you told them you had a cesarean section?”

Well I said what is important is that you and your baby are alive and doing well

In fact women who go through cesarean section are very strong women and there is nothing limiting about it

You take more time to get out of bed after cesarean section compared to vaginal birth

You have to breastfeed your baby though you are dealing with pain probably from the wound site

You have to dress your wound and it takes time to heal

Even the fast before surgery

The time you spend before resuming your normal diet etc

If you have gone through a cesarean section, trust me! You are a definition of a strong woman

If it’s that easy why do some women start crying immediately they are told they will have one!

Cooperate with your doctor or midwife if you have to do a cesarean section to save your life and that of your baby!

Remember it’s a life saving procedure and not just done for convenience!

Don’t risk your life trying to prove to any one you are a woman by having a vaginal birth if your doctor has told you not to.

You are a definition of a strong woman!

WHAT CAUSES ABDOMINAL PAINS DURING PREGNANCY By Mary Frimpomaa

1.As your uterus expands it causes the round ligament to stretch. It’s one cause of early abdominal pain.

2.Progesterone (a pregnancy hormone) causes relaxation of plain muscles in the colon, slowing down movement of digested food. Some food residues accumulate in part of the colon producing gas. Movement of this gas internally produces sharp pain.

3.This same colon relaxation causes constipation which intends produces pain.

Therefore if your cause is from the first one see your Doctor for the right analgesic.

The second cause;
i. Drink more water and it should be frequently too.
Ii. Eat small amount of food at a time and allow it to descend before you add up.
Iii. You can change position to reduce the pain. If it persists see M.O.

The third cause;
Take more fluids
Exercise
More fiber diet etc.

Midwife Sally NB Severe abdominal pains are not normal. There are also more severe conditions that could be happening…..placenta abruptio, eminent eclampsia etc. Call your doctor right away.

UMBILICAL CORD

This is amazing!

The umbilical cord has three blood vessels in it

Two arteries and one vein

Its basic function is to carry oxygen, nutrients to the baby

If any of the blood vessels is missing its an indication that there could be a problem

After your baby is born if there is no complication, your midwife will wait for it to stop pulsating so the baby gets enough blood before it is cut. It helps in the first months of the baby’s life.

MY BIRTH STORY – FULL OF SUSPENSE AND SURPRISES

On Sunday 18th July, I woke up from my sleep around 3:30am with a sharp pain. I went back to sleep again because I couldn’t feel the pain again. At 5:40, I went to the washroom to urinate only to find blood. I called my mum to see and she said “Lord I thank you” it’s labor. I was 40weeks gone by then so they were all looking forward to that labor set in. I decided to wait and go to the hospital later because I wanted to dilate like 5cm before going to the hospital.

I later left the hospital alone without my things and my mum. I was checked around 6pm and it was only 1cm dilation. “Only 1” I shouted. Before I left for the hospital, I decided that I would let my mum bring my bag after the VE. But when I found out that I had dilated only 1cm, I decided to go for the bag myself. We drove back home, went to eat and sleep. So around 4am that dawn(19th July), we left for the hospital. I was then checked again and I was 2cm. Eeiii dadaada nu 2cm? Boiii.
So they prepared my bed and everything. At 9am, another VE was done and I was 4cm away. At 1pm another VE was done and I was still 4cm. Hmmm…. I started walking around so I could dilate faster. They did another VE at 7pm and I was still 4cm… That was when I started crying. The doctor came and they told him I have repeated 4cm 3 times since morning. He then said they should monitor.

The nurse gave me an infusion. At 1am on the 20th July, they did another VE and I dilated 6cm. Then from there the correct pains started. Eeii I couldn’t sit, stand nor sleep on my bed. I was holding the infusion standing and walking around like a mad woman.
At 5am on that same 20th July, they took me to the labor ward. They checked and my cervix has fully opened. The Midwife even said my baby’s head is just here. And before then I was already feeling the edge to push.
Now it is left for me to push. Push! Push!! Push!!!… I have pushed all my strength out, the baby isn’t coming.

The midwives now said; Do any style you are comfortable in. You can squat or walk around. Anytime you feel like pushing, push wherever you are standing we will catch the baby. We tried all that but baby was still not coming. Later they initiated “tag of war”… They pick one of my old cloth, asked me to hold the end and they also held and other folded end. And asked me to pull the cloth anytime I feel the contractions. That also didn’t work. I have already spent 5 hours in pushing and still to no avail. Any doctor or midwife that comes in says they should take me to the theater for second course( CS).

The midwife delivering my baby also sees me to be pushing soo well. So she keeps on saying; she is pushing too oo but the baby isn’t coming.
Another doctor came in suggesting they use a vacuum to pull the baby out. But the midwives and the doctor there said the part of the baby’s head that has been out for all those hours will cause harm or something if they put the vacuum over there to pull the baby. So the doctor then asked one midwife to stand on the stir to the bed. And then asked me to push when I feel the contractions.

And also asked another midwife to give me an Episiotomy.
So we did this formation. I’m supposed to push harder, one midwife stands on the stir to the bed and pushes my stomach and the other midwife gives me an Episiotomy.
The doctor started hitting(in a form of massage) my stomach with his fingers and kept on asking me if I felt the contractions… So as soon as the contractions started coming, I began to push… Push!!!!!!! And the midwife on the stir to the bed was also pushing the baby from the top of my tummy…And the doctor shouted; give Epis …. na sh33ww…
And he continued saying, don’t stop pushing… There naaaa the baby’s head is out. And they pulled the baby out… come and see clapping..

Thank you @⁨Midwife Sally⁩ and @⁨Midwife Munira⁩… and all of you for making this journey a success. God bless you all… I wish the rest of the preg go’s safe delivery

TOWARDS THE END OF PREGNANCY

Your baby’s movement should not slow down

You should feel your baby’s kicks and movement

If babies movement slows down or becomes excessive, call your doctor or report immediately

Also remember your placenta at a point may not continue to function or support your baby properly

Your pregnancy should not go beyond 42 weeks

Be mindful of that and speak to your doctor or midwife if you are a week close to 42 weeks for the best intervention and monitoring

Baby born veiled or En-Caul

#midwifesally #books #maternalhealth #Encaul #babymovements

A MUST READ- MECONIUM STAINED LIQUOR

Midwife Sally what causes the water around a baby to become greenish and why do midwives/doctors consider it as an emergency?

During pregnancy the baby is surrounded by fluid/water which is called #liquor. It protects the baby in utero.

#Meconium is the first stool of the baby and it is also greenish in color

In utero a healthy baby will not poo into the liqour that surrounds it.

Several factors can cause your baby to go into distress in utero. Once your baby does not get enough oxygen in utero, with time if no intervention is given. The anal sphincter muscles and the other sphincter muscles of the baby will relax.

Baby will start to poo into the amniotic fluid, and also aspirate. Meconium liqour can also get into the respiratory system. It gives the liqour that greenish color

If your waters break and the liqour is greenish in color it shows that your baby may be deprived of oxygen and is struggling to survive. Delivery has to be as soon as possible to prevent further complications.

The more greenish or thick the liqour is the worse the complications can be.

Always cooperate with your midwife or doctor to expedite delivery. The earlier baby is delivered the better complications are reduced.
In some cases an emergency Caesarian section can be done to save the baby. Other investigations will be done to ascertain whether baby Is really in distress or not.

If you get into labor pay attention to the liqour around the baby, if it’s greenish in color immediately alert the medical staff or report immediately to the hospital.

Once baby is born, they may need additional care at the neonatal intensive care unit or help with breathing.

Midwives are always be ready to resuscitate new borns that need help with breathing.

THE PLACENTA SHOULD BE FULLY DELIVERED AFTER BIRTH – MUST READ

Some complains you get from women after birth, am having severe lower abdominal pains, am bleeding a lot, I have foul smelling discharge etc. These complains should not be taken lightly. Read further to get more insight.

After the birth of your baby, the placenta has to be delivered

It has to come as complete or whole. No portion of the placenta or membranes should be left in the uterus.

The midwife examines to make sure all the lobes, membranes have all been delivered.

lf anything remains in there it can cause infection, as well as severe bleeding

The retained product can prevents the uterus from contracting.

If you suddenly have heavy bleeding after birth or an abortion , kindly report to your midwife or doctor.

Some times after an abortion, you may need
further investigations or a scan to make sure the abortion is complete and no other product of conception is left in the uterus.

Further investigations and interventions will be done to prevent further bleeding

WE ARE MAKING A DIFFERENCE- MY STORY

I don’t really know what I’d have done without you sweet mother’s. God bless each one of you for just being on this platform. Midwife Sally God richly bless you for this great privilege.

On Wednesday morning I was doing my normal cleaning when I noticed droplets of blood. I called my kid bro(nurse) who’s with me and he got me ready for the hospital. Though it was my usual day for ANC. I was 40 weeks and that was my Edd from the first scan(3-09).

I called my gynecologist and midwife(another set of blessing I had). Upon reaching the hospital with so much pain I had dilated just 1cm. My gynae wanted me to go back home and come later but checking in 3hours time I was 4cm gone so he was now convinced its labour.

It took me 11hours to get to 8cm and that was at 11:30 pm so I was help with some droplets in my infusion and by 12:57am my princess arrived. With the help of frequent massages from my midwife I could endure the pain but mums I tell you there’s nothing as painful as that but once you see baby you’re OK.

I had a little tear cos I raised by butt but with three pushes baby was in. Everything learnt on this platform is very important mums especially we the first time mums. Let’s remember to keep it in our heads.

On my bed I was referring to some of these chats. I’m so happy and grateful to every member on this platform cos you played a role in one way or the other. You were all the family I had during my pregnancy journey. May our good Lord continue to protect us all and grant us safe deliveries.

Forgive me for my thesis wae cos I’m too happy

CAN A BABY IN BREECH PRESENTATION TURN BEFORE BIRTH?

Your midwife or doctor may have told you your baby is not lying in the womb as expected.

In breech presentation it means the presenting part of the baby is the buttocks and it has some implications during birth

Though vaginal birth is possible it depends on several factors example.. Is it your first time giving birth? The weight of the baby, the skill of the midwife etc.

Depending on the stage of the pregnancy, the breech presentation may turn. As the pregnancy grows its likelihood of it turning especially in the last weeks of pregnancy reduces.

Your midwife or doctor may teach you some exercises to help baby turn. It may or may not turn in some cases. Not all are also fit for some excercises. Speak to your midwife or doctor

It’s important to plan your birth and also listen to your doctor or midwifes recommendation. In some cases a cesarian section may be requested.
