MY BIRTH STORY- I REMAIN GRATEFUL…

I joined your class with very little knowledge about pregnancy. I took it upon myself to follow all you teach us. I hardly comment in the group though. From nutrition all the way to birth preparedness. In Fact every bit of my journey with you was a blessing and something I’m grateful for. You encouraged us to remain positive and never leave our pregnancy to chance. I had a smooth pregnancy journey but in the end I ended up in the theater. Initially I intended to change my health facility but upon critical thought, and what you said in the class about choosing a place where they can handle emergencies in the case of any eventuality, I resorted to maintaining my hospital and that saved my life and that of my baby. If I had to be transferred to a different hospital as a result of my emergency ,my story wouldn’t have ended joyfully and I thank God for that. I had so much knowledge that at a point, my Gynae asked if I’m a nurse. When labour wasn’t progressing any longer and I was told there has to be an emergency Cs, quickly I agreed because you took out all that fear and thought I had about Cs. My baby was quickly attended to because she was going through distress. .It didn’t make me less of a woman. What was important is that I and my baby girl are fine.
I remain grateful paa. God bless you for me.

THE AMNIOTIC SAC

It is also called the bag of waters or the membranes,

It is the sac in which the fetus develops

It is a thin but tough transparent pair of membranes that can hold a developing embryo till labor starts

The amniotic sac has two parts

1. Amnion- The amnion is the inner layer of the amniotic sac

2. Chorion- The outer layer of the bag of waters is called the chorion

The amniotic sac protects the baby from infection and also contains amniotic fluid which surrounds the baby.

Your water should not break before your due date. Do report if your waters have broken and labor has not started.

It should be intact throughout pregnancy until labor sets in or it is broken by your doctor or midwife

It breaking means the water that surrounds the baby can be reduced causing further complications

THE UTERUS AND BLADDER DURING PREGNANCY

I keep visiting the washroom more frequently and am in the third trimester. Is it normal?

This is the reason. The Uterus which is carrying your baby is sitting right above the bladder putting pressure on it.

It cannot fully expand to its capacity

It make the urge to urinate more frequent.

This is completely normal as your uterus expands and baby grows big.

As baby drops into the pelvis the pressure increases as well.

Getting to the end of pregnancy the urge to visit the washroom increases and its uncomfortable for most women.

Also know that increase in frequency together with other symptoms like pain during urination, severe lower abdominal pain, fever etc could also be a sign of infection.

Good perineal hygiene is key to avoid infection. Stay close to the washroom and at night reduce the amount of fluids you take so your sleep will not be interrupted.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT YOUR MENSES

To have a better life as ladies you should have basic knowledge about how your body works and for women your menstrual cycle is extremely important.

Some questions you should be able to answer without stress include:

When did your first menses begin? Example.. At 12, 13 or 14 years old. (Menarche)

When was the first day of your last menstrual period? Always keep record of it. It helps to time your fertile and safe period. If pregnant it will help to show your expected date of delivery as well as the maturity of the baby. If correct more reliable than scan

How long is your menstrual cycle? Some may be 28, 30 or 31 days. Every woman is different

How many days does your menstrual bleeding take? It could be 3, 4, 7 or any other. It give doctors and idea of your general health status

How regular is your menstruation? For some it’s consistent, others it’s irregular. It has its implications too.

Is the bleeding heavy or light?

Does it come with pain? Know how your normal menses feels like

Older women should also note their last menses and record it. (Menopause)

Being familiar with your menstrual cycle and history will help you to take charge of your Reproductive health and fertility.

BREECH BIRTH – A MUST READ

At term your baby should be head down. The presenting part of the baby should be the head. In medical terms “occiput anterior” . If the head is delivered first the rest of the body easily follows

But unfortunately it is not the case for every one. Some baby’s present even at term with either the buttocks, hand, foot, shoulder and in some cases in a transverse lie.

This makes normal delivery in some cases a bit difficult.

Thanks to our midwives and doctors. A lot of these cases are detected earlier through palpation of the abdomen. Scan is also requested and that also helps to diagnose most of these cases before the birth of your baby

If a breech birth is diagnosed earlier, within the second trimester. There is a likelihood for baby to turn into the right position before birth. Your midwife will teach some exercise that will be helpful to you.

If detected late or baby does not change position at term, It’s important to discuss mode of delivery with your health care provider.
Natural delivery may be allowed depending on findings like baby’s weight, mothers parity, skill of the healthcare provider among others.

In some cases caesarian section will be requested to save both the life of the baby and mother.

It’s dangerous to allow traditional birth attendants to try to turn the baby. It has led to serious problems and even death of some mums. Do not allow this!

Cooperate with your health care provider to provide the best solution.

CAN I JUST TELL MY DOCTOR I WANT A CESARIAN SECTION TO AVOID VAGINAL BIRTH?

Lots of new mums have heard so much about birth.

There are lots of stories that make them to fear the thought of giving birth vaginally.

Then the way out to them is to just have a caesarian section so they avoid all the issues that come with vaginal birth

The fact is just like vaginal birth comes with some risk, caesarian section also comes with its risk as well.

It is a procedure that was made to help mums who have issues or indications for it

Example

🔴Baby is too big

🔴There is fetal distress

🔴Baby can’t pass through mums pelvis

🔴Placenta previa

🔴Previous c/s+ short interval

🔴Prolonged labor

🔴Bad obstetric history etc

It’s not the best to just ask for a caesarian section without any indication or proper reason

Speak to your midwife or doctor. Make a proper birth plan that suits your condition. It should not be based on your fear or what people have said about birth

You can approach birth more confidently by preparing for it.
