1ST 1000 DAYS OF YOUR BABY’S LIFE- DON’T DEPEND ON KOKO

It’s the most critical period of your child’s development

From pregnancy till baby is almost 2 and half years

Nutritious meals during pregnancy

Exclusive breastfeeding till 6 months

Complementary foods after six months!

Most of the problems starts with weaning, mums struggle to give the right nutrition

In our settings “Koko” is the norm. The sad aspect is when nothing is added

Was glad when I saw this post in our mums group.

One mum teaching and inspiring other mums, the foods they can give

Imagine the nutrient baby will get from all these foods blended together

Even a spoon will be enough

Your child’s nutrition matter

Don’t get it wrong

Feed your baby with foods from all the six food groups

Carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins and minerals, fats and oils. In adequate proportions

If your child will do well in school, the nutritional foundation counts.

If your child will be healthy in future nutrition counts

Don’t depend on just “Koko”

Also give foods that are fortified with nutrients

Speak to a nutritionist to guide you!

SEX DURING PREGNANCY-IS IT SAFE?

This is one of the questions most new couples who are expecting for the first time will ask.

While some are scared it can cause miscarriage others believe it can result in developmental problems

Some men will also completely avoid their wives with the intention of protecting the unborn baby and also to give their partners some space.

Some women will also avoid having sex due to the hormonal and emotional changes that occur with pregnancy

It is worth knowing that sex during pregnancy is #safe and does not pose a problem to the mum or unborn baby. Baby is enclosed in its sac/membranes and the opening of the uterus the cervix is also closed. It also has a mucus plan that prevents anything from entering the uterus.

What is important is to have considerations. The pregnancy hormones and the early signs and symptoms can make a woman not desire to be intimate. It’s important for her partner to be considerate to support her through the process. There are times she will want to be intimate, there are times she will refrain. Make use of her happy days.

Some few women who have had repeated abortions or threatened abortions may be advised by their doctors or midwives to avoid sex especially if an incompetent cervix is diagnosed.

Couples can have sex throughout the pregnancy period. It is only to be #avoided when your doctor or midwife advises you #against it due to your health condition or as mentioned above.

During the last trimester, couples can still have sex. What is needed is to assume a position that will not put pressure on the abdomen and also the woman will be comfortable. It should also be gentle.

During the last trimester when labor is about to set in, it is believed to help trigger the onset of labor. The semen also contains prostaglandin which also helps to soften the cervix and help labor to start.

It’s also important to know that, you really do not need sex to maintain your pregnancy. Baby is safe and mum is also safe. Women should not be compelled to have sex if they don’t feel like or are currently not in any relationship whilst pregnant.Labor will still be initiated naturally.#midwife

MY BIRTH STORY – THE DECISION I TOOK SAVED THE LIFE OF MY BABY.

EDD 16th and 9th of December.
God’s own Time 30/11/2022
God was faithful throughout my pregnancy journey, I was well throughout without complications

At week 32 my baby was lying at transverse, so I was asked by my midwife to see the doctor, which I did.
The Doctor examined me and kept me on weekly check up which I obeyed, so at week 37 he asked me to repeat a scan, if the baby hasn’t turned he will turn it himself, but I quickly requested for CS instead because my first pregnancy I lost the baby at birth so I didn’t want to take chances.

But I repeated the scan and it showed the baby was now at cephalic presentation.
But I still insisted on the CS because of my past experience and also within me I wasn’t just comfortable with Vaginal birth.

The Doctor asked me to go home and return on Wednesday for the CS.
On Wednesday I was taken to the theatre and in the process of the operation they realised that baby was coming out with BUTTOCKS and with a CORD around the NECK.
The decision I took became a divine timing for my baby to be saved. They were able to bring baby out alive and we are both doing well. The doctors were so happy me for insisting on CS.

Midwife Sally God bless you so much, because of your teaching on CS I wasn’t afraid to make that decision on CS, which ended up saving my baby’s life.
I pray May God see all pregnant women through.

MY BIRTH STORY – INDUCTION OF LABOR WENT WELL

Good evening midwives and mummies in the house. My miracle rainbow baby boy arrived yesterday evening. My EDD was 20th April. I was asked to report to the hospital for induction at dawn yesterday and after 2 tablets, I was 8cm dilated. After several urges to poo, my midwife saw the crowning of my baby’s head and indicated I was ready. As a first time mom, I was given an episiotomy and the baby was out after 3 pushes. It’s been a wonderful journey and I’m grateful for all your help.

What is induction of labor – Labor induction is the process or treatment that stimulates childbirth and delivery.

Why is induction of labor done- Its done for several reasons to save your life and that of your baby

Postterm pregnancy. …
Prelabor rupture of membranes. …
Chorioamnionitis. …
Fetal growth restriction. …
Oligohydramnios. …
Gestational diabetes. …
High blood pressure disorders of pregnancy. …

It is a safe procedure if you are carefully monitored.

DON’T RISK THE LIVES OF YOUR UNBORN BABY

Mums walk to me smiling. Midwife Sally I am pregnant for 43 weeks and I have reported since labor is still not setting in.

Sally.. Really, which midwife saw you and did not let them see you for admission and further management at 41 weeks.

She goes ahead and mentions a midwife’s name. I got confused but could not react.

Then I led her to the midwife. The midwife opens the folder and draws my attention to the date.

She was supposed to come on admission a week earlier. She refused and went home. Reported back and mentioned a colleague’s name.

She didn’t know we document everything we tell them

The point is your placenta will stop working at a point if your baby is not born. It can’t support your baby any more, especially after 42 weeks.

So at 41 weeks if the baby hasn’t arrived. You will be closely monitored and a possible intervention, either induction or cesarean section will be done to save the baby.

Women come with stillbirths due to delay.

Know your expected date of delivery(40 weeks) and don’t let it pass for more than two weeks.

At 41 weeks… You need to ask your doctor what next?

Also cooperate with your healthcare provider. Give accurate information.

WHY I RECOMMEND STARTING ANTENATAL EARLY DURING PREGNANCY AND TAKING AN EARLY SCAN

🔴Let’s have a passionate talk. There is this trend where women are told to hide #pregnancy and even wait till 4 or 5 months before starting antenatal.

🔴Hmm… In modern times when I hear this I get shocked some women still hold to this view.

🔴Let’s me tell you the truth as it is. Maternal mortality has reduced as compared to what we had in the olden days. Most of them did not have access to scan, and a good healthcare system.

🔴Am not saying we are there yet, but it has been better than before. The reason is this!

🔴Today as we speak after you get pregnant you do a scan that will tell you exactly if your baby is in utero, our mothers didn’t have this! If it’s in the fallopian tube or any where else it will be seen and something can be done to prevent a ruptured ectopic which can be very fatal

🔴Ask yourself if you wait till four months before taking your first scan, and it is ectopic what will happen? Women have lost their lives due to this. Will you allow this to happen to you when a scan is readily available and all this can be prevented? No! Never be a victim!

🔴Mothers who do not start antenatal early pose a great danger to themselves and their baby’s. Don’t forget that once you start several laboratory investigations will be done and if there is a problem, it will be treated as soon as possible to prevent complications.

🔴Ask any #midwife who would like to tell you the truth. We get women in worse conditions because she was waiting to get to 4 months or 5 months before coming for antenatal. Some even present with severe uncontrolled blood pressure, various infections etc

🔴Whilst waiting and trying to hide your pregnancy you may even be doing more harm, since you may not have even started taking your recommended folic acid and haematinics.

🔴Let’s be truthful to ourselves  the earlier you start antenatal, do an early scan, laboratory investigations and start your prescribed medication, the better!!!

🔴In this modern day, let’s not hold to the old tales that were not helpful!!! Thanks

YOUR PLACENTA AFTER BIRTH

After birth a woman quarrels with the midwife. Give me my placenta!!!

Midwife… You didn’t tell me you want it. If you did, I would have separated it for you to send it home. I added it to all other placentas since we have a way of keeping it and disposing it.

There are several beliefs that surround the placenta. For some it has to be buried in your home, some have rituals they do for the baby.

For some it can be encapsulated and eaten. Used for treating anemia or preventing postpartum depression

For some of us without any belief we just live it at the hospital for it to be disposed of.

If you have something to do with your baby’s placenta. Write it in your birth plan how you want it to be handled after it is birthed

You may be told to bring a labeled container so they put it in after birth.

If you have not written it in your birth plan. On the day of delivery or cesarean section, tell your midwife so they can put it in a container for you.

It should also be known that it is highly vascular and has to be treated with utmost care. Infection prevention techniques should be used in handling the placenta.

Always remember you have a choice how your placenta should be treated after birth. Only communicate effectively with your birth attendants to prevent misunderstanding.

BIG BABY: WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW – A MUST READ

🔴Many women are concerned about the size of their bumps during pregnancy. They are always asking my bump is small and it is not growing as big as I expect. Will it affect my baby? Is it safe?

🔴The answer is your fundal height is what usually gives a midwife a clue as to whether baby is small for date or big for date. Fundal height is what you see a midwife using tape measure to measure the bump. So it does not really depend on the appearance of your bump. A scan can also be done to determine your fetal weight. Your midwife or doctor will alert you when there is a deviation.

🔴At birth your expected fetal weight considered normal is 2.5 kg to 3.5 kg. Any thing less or more is considered as underweight or over weight.

🔴Babies that are born and are overweight or big come with their own problem. Some include respiratory problems , birth injuries, hypothermia, hypoglycemia/reduced glucose level in the blood, still birth etc

🔴Before your due date your doctor will request a scan. This scan can predict your babies weight. Together with measuring your fundal height doctor may diagnose that you are likely to have a big baby.

🔴Birth has to be done by a skilled attendant in a hospital. If baby is very big, the doctor may request a caesarian section.

🔴Mothers with gestational diabetes are likely to have big baby’s and it is important that birth is done in a hospital with a neonatal intensive care unit to recitate baby where need be. During pregnancy glucose should be controlled to prevent complications

🔴Eating a well balanced diet, exercising and taking prescribed medication can help you get a healthy weight for your new born

🔴After reading this hope you see that having a healthy baby does not mean baby should be big or your bump should be big!

🔴Stay healthy… #Share and invite someone to join us to learn more.
