IS IT SAFE TO TAKE “SOBOLO” DURING PREGNANCY?

Hi Dear I will like to draw your attention to this since your page is all about pregnancy. I am a married woman with 3 kids. I was pregnant again n I lost the pregnancy. I decided to find answers and discovered that sobolo drink is contraindicated in pregnancy. I never new this until I fell victim. I almost died on Wednesday out of hemorrhagic shock. Can u please research deeper into it and let the public know. It might save a life. Thanks from- Akua

Sally– During pregnancy I used to take it till I realized it turned my teeth dark immediately I took it. I knew it was a reaction. I avoided it completely for my own safety.

Just like most herbal teas and medication, you cannot be sure of the dosage, efficacy and its effect on your pregnancy

The fact that it is herbal does not mean it is safe

Yes it has antioxidants, vitamin C and other nutrients but what are the other components and how does it affect pregnancy

Some effects it can have on your pregnancy

It lowers your blood pressure and also can increase blood flow to the uterus.

It can initiate contractions which can lead to bleeding

It may also affect your hormones and should be avoided during the first trimester of pregnancy

Women on antihypertensive should avoid taking “sobolo” or hibiscus

More research needs to be done on its effect during pregnancy.

Avoid “SOBOLO” during pregnancy if possible and use with caution under your doctors instructions.

WHICH POSITION WILL YOU PREFER DURING LABOR?

When a woman gives birth in an upright position, the pelvis is more open, birth is faster and birth trauma is significantly reduced. Giving birth on your back reduces the pelvic cavity by almost a significant 30%. Why are we rather stuck with this option?

Women should have more control of their bodies during labor and delivery!

It’s high time our birthing centers are made to suit the individual needs of women in our communities.

Change is possible! Advocacy is key! Let’s make our voices heard. #Share till our stakeholders and policy makers get to notice!

YOUR BABIES FIRST CRY

It is the only form of cry that brings joy to the new mum, her family and the entire medical team.

A baby who is able to cry at birth, show the state of health of the newborn

A loud cry and pink baby indicates the baby is healthy. Other things will be checked too using the apgar score

A weak cry may indicate that the baby needs a little assistance to adjust to life or  breathe.

Baby born without crying may also need help to breathe

Lots of babies respond with just a little resuscitation

Choose a  hospital ready for neonatal resuscitation and any emergency.

WHY DID MY MIDWIFE DELAY TO CUT MY BABY’S CORD?

After baby is born, baby’s umbilical cord will be cut to separate it from its mum

There are two ways it can be done.

It can be cut immediately after baby is born. It’s called immediate cord clamping. It’s cut whilst the cord is still pulsating.

The other way is delayed cord clamping. Delayed cord clamping allows the cord to stop pulsating before it is cut.

Delayed cord clamping is preferable as it allows the baby to get enough blood from mum before it is cut.

In emergency cases where the life of the baby or mum is at stake immediate cord clamping may be the best option so they can quickly attend to either mum or baby. Especially when the baby comes severely asphyxiated and needs resuscitation. In a case when mum is bleeding after birth the baby will be separated immediately so mum can be saved.

If all things are well, both mum and baby delayed cord clamping is the best option as it allows the baby to get enough blood which helps the baby in their early months of life.

Ask your midwife or doctor what is practiced in the facility.

HOW BREASTFEEDING CAN HELP STOP BLEEDING

Did you know breastfeeding right after your baby is born can help the uterus to contract and there by help stop bleeding? Yes as your baby sucks oxytocin is released and this hormone helps the uterus to contract.

It is one of the reasons why early initiation of breastfeeding is important to both mum and the baby.

It also explains why as the baby sucks the mum experiences what we call after pains. Pains in the lower abdomen as the baby is breastfeeding. It is as result of the baby sucking and the oxytocin released to help the uterus to contract after birth.

After pains can be controlled by taking analgesics, exercise and also rest. Excessive pain is not normal and should be reported.

Bleeding excessively after birth should also not be considered as normal. Do report early to prevent further complications

Lets pack your hospital bag for you.

I CAN’T FEEL MY BABY MOVE- IS MY BABY ASLEEP IN UTERO?

Its important that once quickening which is the first baby movement a mum feels during pregnancy starts, it should not stop or slow down

At least you should feel your baby move every day

Mums should be familiar with how their babies move and if there is any significant change report immediately.

Your baby’s fetal movement should not slow down or become excessive.

If you cant feel it at all kindly report to the hospital.

Never assume its because your baby is sleeping!

Your baby’s movement can start between 16 to 22 weeks of pregnancy. It can be earlier for mums who have given birth before.

Other factors may affect how you feel the baby’s movement. But do report if it slows down or becomes excessive

Excessive baby movement or decrease in baby’s movement pattern could be a sign that baby is in distress.

Don’t leave your pregnancy to chance!

PREGNANCY AND WORK – MATERNITY RIGHTS

Share your thoughts.

Mums complaining of resigning due to pressure on them at the work place.

Being forced to work in uniforms that are not comfortable.

Bosses refusing to grant permission for antenatal, etc

Forced to work extra time and all that

And oh yes. Some forfeit their maternity leave to keep their jobs. Yes six weeks postpartum and back to work

The worst is mums terminating pregnancy’s they wanted just to keep their jobs

Some are denied promotions and certain placements due to pregnancy
Should it be so?

Are women aware of their maternity rights?

Where do women go for support when their basic rights are denied them?

Until our voices are heard some women will continue to suffer in silence

Lets not forget they are carrying the future leaders of this country. Compromising with their lives is compromising with the lives of our future leaders!!!

DOUCHING AND INFERTILITY

Two years after my second girl was born, I was having some kind of problem so I decided to use this feminine wash called….. I used it for about two weeks and I think it was helping but the problem Is It’s heading to a year now and I realized that I cannot get pregnant even after making sure it is my most fertile days. Could the #douching the cause of my infertility?

From my search : “Douching may reduce a woman’s chance of getting pregnant in a particular month by about 30 percent, according to a new study.

The study, published in the June issue of the American Journal of Public Health, showed that douching-practiced by many women to cleanse and deodorize the vaginal cavity — is associated with a delay in pregnancy.”

It’s Important to know that the vagina is self cleansing. The secretions there are protective and the normal bacteria in your vagina is also protective.

There is no need to put any substance into your vagina to clean or tighten it

It’s ok to wash your vulva with clean water, that’s the outer portion but the vagina does not need washing.

Apart from reducing your fertility there are also infections that you could get as a result of douching.

Strict personal hygiene, good nutrition and exercise will help you stay healthy.

Incase of an infection see a doctor for the best treatment

What is Douching The word “douche” means to wash or soak. Douching is washing or cleaning out the inside of the vagina with water or other mixtures of fluids. Most douches are sold in stores as prepackaged mixes of water and vinegar, baking soda, or iodine. The mixtures usually come in a bottle or bag.( Source : Google)

FOLIC ACID AND SPINAL BIFIDA

During pregnancy, one of the vitamins that is deemed as extremely important during pregnancy is folic acid.

Taking folic acid prevents some fetal abnormalities such as Spina Bifida. Women who take folic acid reduce their chances of getting spinal Bifida by 70%.

Spina Bifida occurs when a developing baby’s spinal cord fails to develop or close properly while in the womb.

Symptoms can sometimes be seen on the skin above the spinal defect. They include an abnormal tuft of hair, a birthmark or protruding spinal cord tissue.

Folic acid can be started prior to pregnancy for best outcomes

If you are not on folic acid once you get pregnant start taking folic acid to reduce your chances of getting fetal abnormalities

Folic acid helps in the proper development of cells.

Folic acid can be found in green leafy vegetables, dried beans etc

Some foods are also fortified with folic acid to prevent further complications

Once your baby is born inspect the back. Report any abnormality you notice, whether protruding or dimpling.

It’s complications can cause paralysis, brain infection, hydrocephalus and urinary tract infect

When treatment is needed , it’s carried out through surgery to close the defect. Other treatments focus on managing complications.

POSTPARTUM REST- A NECESSITY AFTER BIRTH

Well, well, well… Ladies, when I hear women saying “after birth, that same day I was washing, cooking and even going to the farm” ,I laugh .

Sure you are certainly asking why I laugh.

Because I get to see the other side of its effect in the hospital.

After birth your aim should not be to please society. Your main aim is to help your body heal and regain back your lost strength.

Some women go to the extent of saying “As for me I don’t like people helping me. So even if they did a caesarian section, they get home and try to do everything! To be a superwoman!

Sister, why? Listen, your body needs rest. At least for the first six weeks let someone help or assist you. It’s extremely important.

Women who do not get help or refuse help end up reporting with conditions like postpartum depression, high Blood Pressure, explained sickness,In Fact they don’t heal properly.

Nine months of carrying your baby is no joke, your body has gone through a lot. At least for the first six weeks, get help. Basically rest, walk to be mobile, breastfeed your baby, limit visitors and get some rest. You can also do some passive exercise as well as eat some nutritious meals.

Let me tell you after giving birth it is not over! #Recovery is key! Some women even die due to these little things. It’s not a time to impress society or anyone. You need rest and help to recover.

I remember my friend who had to flee from her mum in law’s house to her family due to the workload and the pressure placed on her. She was supposed to be superwoman. Just after birth she had to cook for the whole family, bath the baby and keep the home. Whilst everyone looked on. Finally she realized how she  was getting depressed, ill and uneasy. She fled to her family where she got some help and started to recover.

Finally note that not everyone is helpful! Choose the right people after birth to help you.

and don’t forget….

YOU NEED REST… DON’T BE A SUPERWOMAN!
