WATER AROUND YOUR BABY

The water that surrounds your baby in utero performs so many functions

Your baby cannot do without it

It allows the baby to move freely, it nourishes your baby and also allows proper development of the fetus etc

It should not get finished whilst your baby is in utero

If your waters leak or breaks before labor sets in report to the hospital

Just as we cant live without the air that surrounds us.

Your baby cant live without the the water that surrounds it

Report immediately if you suspect your water has broken and amniotic fluid is leaking.

Dont wait for days before reporting.

MY BIRTH STORY – THERE WAS CORD AROUND BABY’S NECK

So my EDD was 18th September, 2021. So on Tuesday 14th September, I had done a lot of cleaning in the house preparing for my date. In the evening I had a long walk with hubby and was very tired but hubby still tried to have his way during the night….

And I woke up on Wednesday 15th September around 7:30am and headed to the washroom. Whilst there I felt some slight pain like menstrual pains. I checked myself and saw blood. Immediately I called hubby and told him labor had set in. I took a sharp bath. And afterwards I started having painful contractions but within short intervals. So I called Midwife Sally and told her everything and she told me what to do. My hospital was closer so I went with Hubby without my things. I was checked and had dilated 4cm.

Later I was told to go and bring my things. So to cut it short, dilation kept progressing. But the painful thing was when the midwife had to check with their hands for dilation. Another wahala. So I kept checking till I was told I was 10cm dilated. And that was when another ‘push story began’. I was told to gather strength to push when there is contraction. Eeei I will push and push but no show. At a point in time was given malt to drink water.

Thinking I was weak or hungry. This happened for almost an hour. At one point I held my husband’s hand who was with me in the labor ward and told him to pray because all my strength was gone. But I don’t know how but I gathered all the strength to push at the last minute and the baby girl came out around 5pm with cord around neck. Was told later that was why the baby couldn’t come out whilst I pushed. But by grace Baby and mummy were all doing well. Thanks to Midwife Sally and her team for the good work they are doing. I pray that God sees everyone here through successful.

MY PREGNANCY AND BIRTH STORY

EDD 30/09/22
GOT 29/09/22

Thank God almighty for seeing me through and thanks to midwife Sally, for availing herself as a pillar between God and all pregnant women to help our 9months journey become a successful one (God bless you ).
My pregnancy journey wasn’t all that smooth, the spotting, the vomiting and early morning sickness all came to an end in my third trimester.
At 39 weeks plus 4 days I was told to go and come on 2nd October, 2022 if I have not delivered to see a doctor. Being a mother of two, all through vaginal delivery was scared and worried I might end my third one through CS. But my husband’s hope was high and he told me I should not worry because he believes I will deliver before the appointment date.
Immediately we got home we prayed and we did the do. To cut everything short on the 28th September around 3pm contraction started small small and I was in it till 29th September 5pm. Contraction became very painful so I told hubby am now ready to go to the hospital.
When we got to the hospital around 6:23pm, I was already 6cm dilated and the nurses were surprised about my behavior soo calm. While the nurses were preparing the labour room for me, baby came out on the first aid bed. It was exactly 8:15pm weighing 3kg.

Thank to all the able midwives here, Midwife Sally, midwife Eunice and midwife Munira God bless you all for your support am grateful.

THE MAGICAL ORGAN (PLACENTA). YOUR PREGNANCY SHOULD NOT GO BEYOND 42 WEEKS

Have you ever wondered how you survived 9 months in your mums womb!

Thanks to this magical organ which forms when a woman gets pregnant.

It serves as a connection between mum and baby.

It has three parts, the maternal surface that attaches to the mothers womb, the fetal surface which faces the baby and the cord which contains a vein and two arteries that transport oxygen, nutrients and other needed substances.

The placenta during pregnancy attaches to the upper part of the uterus. It produces hormones that help to maintain pregnancy.

The placenta at a point during pregnancy, when baby is fully matured may stop functioning efficiently. It is important that all pregnant women do not allow their pregnancy to go beyond 42 weeks gestation. At 41 weeks you and your doctor should decide mode of delivery if labor has still not set in.

It can also have problems like placenta previa where placenta, is not in the right location. It can cause problems, but can be managed

After delivery placenta is birthed. A retained placenta or portion remaining after delivery can cause bleeding. Report to the hospital immediately you have severe bleeding after delivery.

After delivery, some cultures have different ways of handling it. If requested, it will be given to you under hygienic conditions. You decide what to do with it as your culture permits.

TURKEY BERRY AND ANEMIA DURING PREGNANCY!!!!

What do you call this in your local dialect? Some names include #AmaJulie or #AnonaNtroba in Fante, #KwahuNsusuwa, #YaaAsantewa, #Beduru, and #Kantosey by the Ga’s.

As a practicing nurse/#midwife. I have some experiences to share. We had a client on the ward whose hemoglobin(HB) level was very low. We needed to boost it so she could go for surgery. She was on #medication for about two week and she was asked to recheck. It improved beyond our expectations and we were wondering what happened. She told us her #mum blends turkey berry and brings to her every morning.
Another client who was pregnant and HB was low decided to add to her meals and blend as well. In a months time. HB was within normal.

Anemia is when your hemoglobin level is low. Below 10g/dl. An average person has HB of 11 to 16 g/dl. Usually higher in men than women due to #menstruation
These #stories made me to search about its benefits and its an amazing plant. It is a rich source of iron, calcium, fiber and #Vitamin A. Iron boost the production of red blood cells, there by improving your hemoglobin level which is necessary for your babies development.
It can be added to stews, soups and blended as well. #Pregnant women and children can benefit if they include this in their diets.

It should not be used to substitute your prescribed #drugs or haematenics. Instead it should be used as a complement.

Don’t mix it with milk. Take separately.

Speak to your nutritionist about it

Also remember to eat well, rest, exercise, and stay healthy during pregnancy.
Talk to your #nutritionist about how you can benefit from this plant.

Also talk to your #doctor first if you are anemic for proper diagnosis and treatment.

THE SECOND STAGE OF LABOR-WHEN THE CERVIX IS FULLY DILATED

The second stage of labor starts when the cervix is fully dilated. In the first stage of labor the cervix is still dilating.

At this stage the mum will be encouraged to bear down since the cervix is fully dilated. The cervix is fully taken up and it cannot cause a cervical tear

The second stage of labor can last between 30 minutes to an hour or two. If it lasts for too long we call it a prolonged second stage of labor.

It can lead to maternal exhaustion, fetal distress and can even result in complications

If prolonged labor occurs an assisted birth or cesarean section will be recommended to prevent further complications

During the second stage of labor

🔴You will be positioned for delivery

🔴Push with contractions with the guidance of your midwife

🔴Rest in between contractions

🔴Cooperate with your doctor or midwife and communicate how you feel or your needs

The second stage of labor ends when your baby is delivered. This ushers in the third stage of labor which is the delivery of the placenta

fetal heart beat

AT EVERY VISIT YOUR FETAL HEART SHOULD BE CHECKED!

fetal heart beat
fetal heart beat

She went into labor and decided to report to the hospital.

At the hospital her fetal heart rate was not checked.

Only a vaginal examination was done and she was told dilation has not started she should go back home.

She went home and after a few days she realized her vaginal discharge has increased. She reported back to the hospital.

This time the fetal heart was listened to but it could not be heard.

Induction was done and a still birth was the result.

Lessons… Baby could have been saved if the fetal heart rate was checked to rule out fetal distress.

Even if it had already occurred it will have been seen earlier and baby delivered to prevent further complications it can bring to the mum.

If you are in the first trimester where the fetal heart is not being heard with a fetoscope at least be sure you feel pregnant. Know how you feel. If pregnancy symptoms stops suddenly kindly do report

Every little thing counts

Don’t leave the hospital without you checking on fetal heart

Also make sure your feel baby kicks

Don’t leave your pregnancy to chance.

HOW TO PREVENT VAGINA INFECTIONS IN A SMART WAY

The vagina has a Ph. of 3.5-4.5 which helps prevent #infection by inhibiting the
growth of bacteria or germs. It is important to know that when the ph. of the vagina is distorted the woman can easily get an infection. To prevent any imbalance in the vagina, women should

  • Avoid douching or inserting chemicals into the vagina. It’s self cleansing
  • Chronic diseases like Diabetes and Hypertension should be under control and treated
  • Avoid abusing the use of antibiotics and only take prescribed medications
  • Regular exercise and taking a balanced diet rich in roughage and vitamins
  • Early treatment of all other infections is also very beneficial
  • Good personal hygiene is also key in helping the vagina stay healthy. Bathing regularly, wearing loose, clean cotton underwear is very HELPFUL, changing pads regularly during menstruation
  • Always remember to keep the perinea area clean and dry.

fundal height

FUNDAL HEIGHT MEASURING AND IT’S RELEVANCE

You may have noticed that at every antenatal clinic especially within your second trimester your midwife or doctor begins to measure your abdomen with a tape measure.

They want to know exactly if your bump is growing as expected.

There is a relationship between the size of your abdomen and the growth of the baby in weeks

It can be used to determine the following

  • Small for date
  • Fetal growth restriction
  • Twin Gestation
  • Normal growth weight
  • Big baby

Your doctor or midwife will do further investigations if any abnormality is suspected.

You can speak to them to know if all is well with your bump.
