RETAINED PRODUCT OF CONCEPTION

After the birth of your baby, the placenta has to be delivered

It has to come as complete or whole. No portion of the placenta or membranes should be left in the uterus.

The midwife examines to make sure all the lobes, membranes have all been delivered.

if anything remains in there it can cause infection, as well as severe bleeding

The retained product can prevent the uterus from contracting.

If you suddenly have heavy bleeding after birth or an abortion , kindly report to your midwife or doctor.

Some times after an abortion, you may need
further investigations or a scan to make sure the abortion is complete and no other product of conception is left in the uterus.

Further investigations and interventions will be done to prevent further bleeding

MY BIRTH STORY – “THIS IS MY TESTIMONY”

EDD: 13th February 2022
DOD: 16th February 2022

My EDD had passed with no signs of labor so my doctor suggested an induction on my last visit that was 11th February.
I was to be induced on the dawn of 16th Feb but I went to the hospital on 15th to relax and wait for the procedure. I arrived at about 6pm settled in my room and about 9pm I started having stomach upset(diarrhoea)so I visited the washroom a couple of times and all of a sudden I could feel slight pains in my abdomen ,pains were on and off. I went to the washroom again and I saw the show. at this point I knew labor has set in I called my midwife around 11 pm she did a VE and confirmed I was 3cm gone so she said as a first timer I’ll give birth the next day and she left.
Contractions were getting worse I was enduring and practicing the breathing exercise until I started feeling the urge to push I called her again she checked me and quickly rushed me to the delivery room .
To GOD be the glory after my third push at 4:31 am my baby was out.
This is a testimony for me ,I prayed through out this pregnancy and God answered with everything I asked for.
Less than 8 hours labor, a very quick and smooth delivery for a first timer was only God.
I listened to midwife and followed every instruction as midwife Sally always said.
I also walked a lot duringpregnancy, rested a lot and God did the rest.

Please prayers really work.
I wish all expectant mums the very best.

As God did for me He will do for all of us.

MY BIRTH STORY – I NEVER THOUGHT I WILL HAVE A CESAREAN SECTION

My EDD was 10th and 12th August 2021. On the midnight of 9th August, I started feeling this on and off contractions which made me not sleep well that night.

Early Tuesday morning, which was the 10th of August, I woke up to visit the washroom and while I was cleaning up I saw blood from my vjay. I immediately went to take some warm shower, called my midwives and I was asked to come with my things right away. I got to the hospital, was checked and I was told labor has not set in yet.

Then I was placed on CTG scan for monitoring(three times).
The story changed when the doctor walked to my ward to inform me that the baby’s heartbeat for the first and second scan were not good, the 3rd scan was okay but not to his expectation, he continued to say that they don’t know when labor will set in and the consequences that might happen afterwards.

The only option to prevent any future occurrences is to perform an Emergency CS, hmm he gave me a little time to think about it and I have to call my hubby to inform him.

I was crying while talking to hubby but he encouraged me. I signed for the consent form. Was inserted with a catheter and sent to the theater. The necessary things were done and within 20-30mins at exactly 5:34pm, the pink baby was out with a weight of 3.3kg, i couldn’t hold my tears when I heard her crying and the midwife came to show her to me. I never thought of cs but God’s ways are always the best for us

We are doing very well by God’s grace. God bless the midwives in the class for all your teachings and advice which contributed to saving my life and my baby.

I wish all other pregnant mom’s a safe delivery and please dont waste time when the need arises. God bless u all

SLEEPING COMFORTABLY DURING PREGNANCY

Sleep helps you relieve tiredness during pregnancy.

It helps you stay healthy.

To relief yourself of the discomfort…

Use extra pillows to make yourself comfortable during sleep.

If you don’t get what is in the image below you can get extra pillows

One inbetween your knees

One supporting your abdomen

And if possible an extra to hold on to or for your head.

Your bed should also be firm

This will support your body and make you feel better

Also remember to sleep on your left or right side.

Dont lie on your back!

FIVE THINGS YOU SHOULD NEVER DO AT HOME FOR A PREGNANT WOMAN!

Many interventions given at home by non professionals can lead to fatal consequences for expectant mums. Its important that we pay attention to professional help or guidance during pregnancy. A few examples have been listed below

1. Do not manipulate her abdomen in any way. If she has a breech presentation, excercise can help at times. Try to turn the baby at home can lead to bleeding and lose of the baby

2.Do not try to keep her at home if she is bleeding or manage it at home. It can lead to her death if its not managed properly

3.Do not give her unprescribed medications whether it is orthodox medicine or traditional medicine. You will never know how it will affect her and her unborn child. If she is ill report to the hospital

4. Do not prevent her from assessing medical and professional care. This can be life saving. A support person should rather be encouraging. Do not take the role of a doctor or midwife. This can be fatal to her

5.Do not beat or abuse a pregnant woman. Dont expect too much. Rather give her a helping hand when need be.

VERNIX CASEOSA- WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

You see that whitish substance on your baby’s #skin after it’s born? What is it and what’s its purpose ?
Some even think it’s dirt or as a result of eating ayilo/shile/Pica. But this is not the case. This is what you should know.
When your baby is born, he might be covered with a thick, white, cheese-like layer called vernix caseosa. The older the baby is the less you find it on their skin. It begins to form around 25 weeks and desolves into the amniotic fluid with time.

It’s benefits

In the womb, vernix helps protect your newborn’s delicate skin from the acidic quality of the amniotic fluid

It hydrates her skin, insulates her body, and maintains a proper and comfortable temperature in utero.

Vernix also does doubles as a lubricant, helping your baby slide out of the birth canal a bit easier.

It gives that new born smell your baby has, it helps mum and baby to bond

The World Health Organization advises delaying baby’s first bath for at least 6 hours, although 24 hours is ideal. This will help baby to adjust to the new environment and the vernix plays a role as well

Wash #vernix off right away if Baby has meconium staining, or if the mother has HIV or hepatitis.

Do not force to remove all at a time. With time all will be removed.

Thanks

TWINS WITH DIFFERENT MODES OF DELIVERY- WOMEN ARE STRONG!

Yes, so this week, I came across a lady who was pregnant with twins.

She went into labor, 10 cm dilated and was asked to push.

The first twin was born successfully via vaginal delivery.

The second twin was delayed in coming. All efforts and maneuvers did not work.

They had to prepare her for the cesarean section. The second twin was born via cesarean section and it was successful!

In the end she experienced vaginal birth and cesarean section within a few hours. A first time mum.

That should be a stressful journey but yet she made it.

Both mum and babies are doing well.

The lesson here is no matter your birth plan or whether you have been told you will by all means have a vaginal birth, you should not close your mind on cesarean section. Also read about it

And most importantly choose a facility that is ready for emergency, has a theater and strong medical team.

Imagine this lady delivered in a facility that had no theater, and a good medical team.

Referral is good but the time that will be wasted before getting to the referral hospital is a problem.

Delay to referral hospitals has caused lots of problems

Do choose your hospitals carefully

If you choose a facility without a theater or you prefer home delivery. Kindly make sure there is a clear policy on what happens in an emergency. At least the referral hospital should be close

On this note I salute all women. You are indeed strong!

YOUR WATERS SHOULD NOT BREAK BEFORE LABOR SETS IN

In utero your baby is covered by an amniotic sac and surrounded by amniotic fluid(Liqour or water around the baby) .

The water around the baby is what keeps the baby healthy and also nourishes the baby

The amniotic sac should not break before labor sets in. When it breaks you can loose the water around the baby and babies development will be affected negatively . Baby can also get an infection due to a break in its protective covering

Any time your waters break during pregnancy. It needs urgent attention. Dont wait for too long. Report to the hospital immediately.

It is completely ok of it breaks when labor has set in. Also remember that if your labor sets in and it doesn’t break your doctor or midwife will do that if its necessary

Finally dont be worried if your waters has not broken and you are full term. When labor sets in your doctor will take care of that

DELAYED CORD CLAMPING VERSES IMMEDIATE CORD CLAMPING AFTER BIRTH

The cord connects the baby to the mother in utero. At birth it is separated so that both baby and mum becomes independent.

The cord at the time of delivery pulsate and contains a good amount of blood.

Research has shown that cutting the cord immediately after birth whilst cord is still pulsating will reduce amount of blood baby can receive as in figure 1. In 2nd picture the cord was not cut immediately, pulsation stopped and there is a greater likelihood that the baby will receive enough blood before it is separated from the mother.

Midwives normally allow delayed cord clamping by cleaning the baby, putting baby to breast, even initiating resuscitation if baby needs it, just to give ample time for cord to stop pulsating and baby to receive enough blood before it is separated from the mother.

It reduces the likelihood of anaemia and other complications in new borns.

You can add this to your birth plan or ask your midwife about delayed cord clamping and it’s benefits to you and the baby.

It may not be done in exceptional cases when life of baby or mother is at risk and needs immediate resuscitation. But in majority of births it is possible.

BIRTH POSITIONS – SQUATS

Did you know squats allow the pelvis to open up more.

The baby gets more space to rotate and come out freely

There is less incidence of injury as compared to lying on your back

Gravity aids the birth to make it more easier

It is also faster as compared to lying on your back.
