THE WATER AROUND YOUR BABY( AMNIOTIC FLUID)

Amniotic fluid around your baby is just as important as the air you breath to the baby.

Significant reduction in the amount of the water called oligohydraminous can lead to malformations in the baby

Too much of it suggests other complications too

It has to be adequate for the baby to form properly

When your waters break before labor sets in, it can lead to infection or other problems

At any time when your waters break do report immediately

DOES HAVING A BIG ABDOMEN MEAN MY BABY IS GROWING WELL?

🔴Many women are concerned about the size of their bumps during pregnancy. They are always asking if my bump is small and it is not growing as big as I expect. Will it affect my baby? Is it safe?

🔴The answer is your fundal height is what usually gives a midwife a clue as to whether the baby is small for date or big for date. Fundal height is what you see a midwife using tape measure to measure the bump. So it does not really depend on the appearance of your bump. A scan can also be done to determine your fetal weight. Your midwife or doctor will alert you when there is a deviation.

🔴At birth your expected fetal weight considered normal is 2.5 kg to 3.5 kg. Anything less or more is considered as underweight or overweight.

🔴Babies that are born and are overweight or big come with their own problem. Some include respiratory problems , birth injuries, hypothermia, hypoglycemia/reduced glucose level in the blood, still birth etc

🔴Before your due date your doctor will request a scan. This scan can predict your baby’s weight. Together with measuring your fundal height, a doctor may diagnose that you are likely to have a big baby.

🔴Birth has to be done by a skilled attendant in a hospital. If the baby is very big, the doctor may request a caesarian section.

🔴Mothers with gestational diabetes are likely to have big babies and it is important that birth is done in a hospital with a neonatal intensive care unit to resuscitate the baby where needed. During pregnancy glucose should be controlled to prevent complications

🔴Eating a well balanced diet, exercising and taking prescribed medication can help you get a healthy weight for your newborn

🔴After reading this, I hope you see that having a healthy baby does not mean the baby should be big or your bump should be big!

FETAL MOVEMENT IS NOT PAINFUL!

Hello midwife Sally, when my baby move it comes with pain, is it normal?

Fetal movement should not come with pain. Do report to be examined

She reported and it was realized that she was having contractions.

Medication was given to abort the contractions. She was a first time mum and could not tell the difference.

The pregnancy was saved since she reported on time.

No form of abdominal pain during pregnancy is considered normal.

WHAT HAPPENS IF YOUR PLACENTA IS DOWN?

During labor the placenta should be the last to be delivered. If it is covering the opening of the womb it means it will be the first to separate. That also means it can cause bleeding since the blood vessels there can’t contract to stop bleeding

If the placenta is down , your birth should be planned. So it doesn’t cause any problems. In severe cases cesarean section is done

If you are pregnant and the cervix is down , you need to be cautious and adhere to your doctor’s advice. Especially on mode of delivery and what to do to prevent bleeding

Our pregnancy class will help you get the best outcome of your pregnancy 024 228 1957.

Don’t leave your pregnancy to chance

WHAT HAPPENS IF MY CERVIX STOPS DILATING DURING LABOR

Yes, no vaginal delivery can occur if your cervix does not dilate. It has to open to allow vagina birth. The cervix is the opening of the uterus. It is also known as the mouth of the uterus.

During pregnancy it is closed. It has to open from 0 to 10 cm, then we say it’s fully dilated. Your midwife will then ask you to push your baby out.

In some women it may stop dilating during labor even with severe contractions.

The midwife will continue to monitor with a patograph every 4 hours by performing vaginal examination especially in the active phase of labor. Assuming you repeat the same figure,4 cm continuously, they may decide to take further steps to prevent complications associated with prolonged labor.

They may choose to augment or move to the next step of performing a cesarean section.

Know that prolonged labor can lead to fetal distress, maternal exhaustion, obstetric fistula etc

At that point every minute counts. Cooperate with your doctor or midwife for the best outcome.

CARE OF THE PERINEUM

The vulva is the outer part of the female Reproductive system. Its what you see when a woman open her legs wide.

It has the vagina opening and the urethral opening.

Just below it is the anus.. Where fecal matter is excreted from the body.

These openings are close to each other. It means infection can easily pass from one opening to the other if you don’t clean well.

It’s important to clean yourself after using the washroom from front to back. Meaning you clean from the Urethral opening, towards the vagina opening then the rectum.

This will prevent sending infection from the rectum into your vagina and urinary tract.

Always maintain strict personal hygiene and also wear clean and comfortable underwear preferably made from cotton.

It’s important to keep your perineum clean and dry to prevent infection.
