They check the fetal heartbeat at every prenatal visit to monitor the baby’s health and development. Here’s why it’s important:
Confirmation of viability: Hearing a heartbeat confirms the fetus is alive.
Detecting distress: Abnormalities in the heart rate may indicate fetal distress or complications.
Tracking development: As the pregnancy progresses, the heart rate pattern changes slightly, and regular checks help ensure it’s within a healthy range.
Reassurance: For both doctors and parents, it’s a simple and non-invasive way to know things are on track.
The hormone that is responsible for pregnancy, will still be present for sometime in your body and gradually reduce after an abortion. So if you just check after an abortion it will still test positive, but after sometime it will be negative.
Always make sure your doctor has done a scan to confirm all is well before you are discharged
If you go home and you begin to bleed or have any symptoms report back to the hospital
Have you ever wondered how you survived 9 months in your mums womb!
Thanks to this magical organ which forms when a woman gets pregnant.
It serves as a connection between mum and baby.
It has three parts, the maternal surface that attaches to the mothers womb, the fetal surface which faces the baby and the cord which contains a vein and two arteries that transport oxygen, nutrients and other needed substances.
The placenta during pregnancy attaches to the upper part of the uterus. It produces hormones that help to maintain pregnancy.
The placenta at a point during pregnancy, when baby is fully matured may stop functioning effeciently. It is important that all pregnant women do not allow their pregnancy to go beyond 42 weeks gestation. At 41 weeks you and your doctor should decide mode of delivery if labor has still not set in.
It can also have problems like placenta previa where placenta, is not in the right location. It can cause problems, but can be managed
After delivery placenta is birthed. A retained placenta or portion remaining after delivery can cause bleeding. Report to the hospital immediately you have severe bleeding after delivery.
After delivery, some cultures have different ways of handling it. If requested, it will be given to you under hygienic conditions. You decide what to do with it as your culture permits.
Young Ghanaian girl from a remote part of Ghana. She was brought to Accra by a young man after she was married to him.
In Accra she got pregnant and started having complications. She had polyhydramnios (Too much amniotic fluid in utero). Though she was in her second trimester, her tummy was as though she was carrying twins. She had already started having lower abdominal pains.
She was really sick and needed to be monitored. All explanations were given to the husband, but he insisted the lady be discharged for him. He was so furious all the nurses were scared and wanted to discharge this young woman to him. His plan was to send the young woman to his parents in the village. This journey will be more than 12 hours and they will be going without an ambulance or health worker. The surprising thing was how his sisters who were women supported their brother to take his wife out of the hospital against medical advice. The young woman had relatives in Accra, but was insisting it’s against her tradition to give birth in your mother’s house. She had to be with the man or his family to avoid bad luck.
She knew she was at risk, but her belief in all these traditions was deeply rooted. She will not go against them. She was not happy with the man’s decision to be sent to the village, but to her, she has no right to decide for herself even in this critical circumstance.
The issue was really complicated. How do you advocate for a woman who will give you up if any situation should arise. Every one of the doctors, nurses recoiled.
It took the intervention of that bold midwife to speak to the husband. She sat him down and explained to him the risk he is posing to the young woman. What if labor sets in on the way and she starts bleeding, what will happen.
Her sister in law was asked in their face if they were in her situation. Will they be happy? Will they allow their brother to risk the life of another woman’s child? This got to them. They vanished a few minutes from the hospital.
Husband now agrees to keep the woman in the hospital. In less than 12 hours the following morning, she had gone into labor and delivered. She was now free of her complications and smiling. Husband comes and thanks the midwives for advocating on behalf of his wife.
It’s important that we begin to think about how our cultural values affect maternal health. Negative beliefs can increase maternal mortality.
Women should understand that they have a say in decisions that affect them.
Men should also support their wives or partners to make decisions that will benefit the women as well. This can go a long way to reduce maternal mortality in Africa.
Several women have lost their lives due to delay in decision making. Waiting for husbands, pastors or other people to decide what should happen to their lives. This is highly unacceptable!, and must change.
Cultural practices that affect women negatively should be changed through education and awareness creation. Join our Pregnancy class to learn more 0242281957. Outside Ghana click here to join https://www.patreon.com/user?u=86216005
This ministry of yours is truly called by God to safe lives. You have know idea the numerous lives you are saving through your platform. My birth story
my pregnancy was a bit smooth during the first trimester but with the second I became very ill and was admitted at the hospital. I was diagnosed with typhoid and infection.
Later I became okay and was discharged. In my third trimester I was very strong . To make my long story short, during my 39weeks I went to the hospital and the doctor told me if I exceed 41 weeks I will have to be induced because exceeding the said weeks may lead to lot of complications.
I was a bit afraid because, a friend of mine told me induction is painful and if it doesn’t work, cs will be the only option . hmm I prayed to god to let labor come naturally but 40 weeks came no show, 41 weeks 2 days no show. I prayed and told God his will should be done. I went to the hospital on the 41 weeks 2 days for the induction the doctor checked and I was 4 cm already dilated with no contraction. He induced me. Hmmm the pain was unbelievable
it was really painful but it worked. I gave birth on the same-day three hours later after I was induced baby came with cord tired to the neck this was the reason labor was delaying. A word of advice to all pregnant women on this platform please listen to your doctors and midwives.

The ovary releases an egg once every month or in a cycle. This is called #ovulation This occurs during your fertile period.
The average woman with 28 days cycle will ovulate in the 14th day of her menstrual cycle. Women have different cycles and therefore ovulation day may be different for every one. It’s important to know that your egg can only live for 24 hours, but #sperm can live 3 to 5 days.
So in order to get pregnant. It’s better to have the sperm in there waiting for the egg to be released.
This increases your chances of getting pregnant
It also explains why you get pregnant and wonder why since you thought you were in your safe period. Sperm can wait up to #5days.
Speak to your midwife or doctor to explain further.

There are several complications that occur as a result of birth. One of them is called an obstetric fistula
A fistula is an opening between two organs. In obstetrics as a result of prolonged labor and other factors, a mum can have an opening between the anus and the vagina or bladder and vagina.
This can cause urine or stool to pass through the vagina. When this occurs, she may leak urine or stool without being able to control it.
It causes lots of inconvenience for the woman. It can also lead to infection. The smell of the urine and feaces can also make her withdraw from society making her condition worse.
Skilled delivery can help prevent fistula.
If after birth you are struggling with controlling urine or feaces, please do seek help.
The good news is that it can be repaired and you will have your regular life again

During pregnancy the cervix secrets mucus. This mucus comes together to form a plug in the cervix . It is also called ‘ Operculum’
Its function is to prevent anything from entering the uterus through the cervix. It’s protective
The only time it is disloged is when the woman is in labor. The opening of the cervix due to cervical ripening or dilation causes it to dislodge and that’s what we see as the mucus that comes out just before birth.
If your mucus plug dislodges before you are term , visit the hospital for further check up.
Also know that after your mucus plug dislodges, it can still take several hours or days for labor to set in.
When you see it dislodged don’t panic, it’s a sign that you will meet your baby soon

This my birth story. My EDD was 22 February 2025, on 23 February I went for antenatal and I was asked to go and do NST at Ga south hospital because I was post dated but I told the midwife God willing I will go the following day because I didn’t put things in order at home. She agreed and encouraged me to go on Thursday Which was the following day. I rested when I got home when I woke up around 4pm I got some divine energy so I washed all our dirty clothes, mob the kitchen and cleaned everything in there.
After I went to do re arrange my hospital bag again and told my husband “I’m doing my last packing”. On 24th around 5am I started having some contractions but I didn’t bother because I was tired of the false labor around 6am it was becoming regular so I told my husband but he was ready for work so I told him to go if I anything I will call him. At 7 am the pain was unbearable I called him and told him baby was coming so I called a driver and he came and picked me to the hospital .we got there around 9am . When I was examined I was already 7cm dilated I was happy because I didn’t know what I would have done if they told me I was 3 or 2cm dilated
Not long then husbee came . Thank God I was the only one in the labor ward so my husband was permitted to enter and he witnessed the second vagina examination that led to the rupture of the amniotic sac and the delivery of the baby and the delivery of the placenta in fact husbee assisted the nurses . Baby came exactly 9:41 am on 24th February,2022. The good news is that we had two boys and I was trusting God for a daughter because my husband as no sister neither his brother is having a daughter so no girl in the family but this time God gave us a princess
I can’t thank God enough all my well wishers are happy for me. Thank you auntie Sally it was a long journey but your teaching really helped me . I know a lot of terms in pregnancy because of you
