AMNIOTIC FLUID AROUND YOUR BABY IS JUST AS IMPORTANT AS THE AIR YOU BREATH TO THE BABY

Significant reduction in the amount of the water called oligohydraminous can lead to malformations in the baby

Too much of it suggests other complications too

It has to be adequate for the baby to form properly

When your waters break before labor sets in, it can lead to infection or other problems

At any time when your waters break do report immediately

HOW DOES AN ECTOPIC PREGNANCY OCCUR?

The fetus is supposed to implant in the uterus where the blue arrows are pointing, but in an ectopic gestation the fetus rather implants outside the uterus. More frequently in the fallopian tube. The fallopian tube cannot accommodate a growing fetus. If not detected early it can lead to a raptured ectopic which comes with so much complications.

When you miss your period, confirm pregnancy by doing an early scan as your health provider the right time to do it.

Don’t wait for too long to start antenatal or join a pregnancy class.

At least they will be able to know if fetus is at the right place!

This can save a life

Every woman should know this!

WHY CORD PROLAPSE IS CONSIDERED AS EMERGENCY?

🔴Umbilical cord prolapse is a complication that occurs prior to or during delivery of the baby. In a prolapse, the umbilical cord drops (prolapses) through the open cervix into the vagina ahead of the baby

🔴This is an emergency.

🔴If the cord is seen coming before the head of the baby and membranes are broken

🔴Blood supply to the baby can be cut off and you end up losing the baby or come with complications like severe asphyxiation

🔴If this happens at home, don’t spend a minute waiting.

🔴Move into a knee-to-chest position on the floor, with your bottom higher than your shoulders, to take the baby’s weight off your cervix. Stay in this position until the ambulance or until help arrives.

🔴Go to the hospital immediately

🔴Handling it unnecessarily can cause it to go into spasms which will cause more problems.

🔴At the hospital delivery will be done in the shortest possible time. An assisted delivery or an emergency Caesarian section will be done to save the baby.

RESTING AFTER BIRTH – A NECESSITY AFTER BIRTH

l, well, well… Ladies when I hear women saying “after birth, that same day I was washing, cooking even going to the farm” ,I laugh 😊
Sure you are certainly asking why I laugh.

Because I get to see the other side of its effect in the hospital.

After birth your aim should not be to please society. Your main aim is to help your body heal and regain back your lost strength.

Some women go to the extend of saying “As for me I don’t like people helping me. So even if she had a caesarian section, they get home and try to do everything! To be a super woman!

Sister, why? Listen! your body needs rest. At least for the first six weeks let someone help or assist you. Its extremely important.

Women who do not get help or refuse help end up reporting with conditions like post partum depression, high Blood Pressure, explained sickness, In fact they don’t heal properly.

Nine months of carrying your baby is no joke, your body has gone through a lot. At least for the first six weeks, get help. Basically rest, walk to be mobile, breast feed your baby, limit visitors and get some rest. You can also do some passive exercise as well as eat some nutritious meals.

Let me tell you after giving birth it is not over! #Recovery is key! Some women even die due to this little things. It’s not a time to impress society or any one. You need rest and help to recover.

I remember my friend who had to flee from her mum in-laws house to her family due to the workload and the pressure placed on her. She was supposed to be super woman. Just after birth she had to be cooking for the whole family, bath baby and keep the home. Whilst every one looked on. Finally she realized how she was getting depressed, ill and uneasy. She fled to her family where she got some help and started to recover.

Finally note that not everyone is helpful! Choose the right people after birth to help you.
and don’t forget….

YOU NEED REST… DONT BE A SUPER WOMAN!

**** PREGNANCY LINE ****

Pregnancy is a beautiful thing! most things from conception to birth has been understood but not every one of them have been fully understood.

One of the pregnancy mystery is what we call #LineaNigra.

It starts appearing when a woman conceives and disappears with time after birth.

It serves no significant purpose except telling us you are pregnant.

Many cultures have interpreted it differently.

One which I have heard is that, it can show whether you are having a boy or girl.

This has not been proven scientifically…. What have you also heard……… Share your thoughts!

#Facts

It is due to hormonal changes during pregnancy. Increased estrogen and melanin

Not all women get this during pregnancy

It doesn’t show if your baby will be healthy or not. Healthy baby depends on your health, nutrition among others

Don’t depend on it to determine the sex of your. You have equal chances of having a boy and a girl.

Enjoy your pregnancy and share as well.

Staying hydrated during pregnancy is a must.

If you cant take enough water, you need a substitute, coconut water, fruit juice, soups etc

If you can’t take or drink anything at all, then you need to report to the hospital

You may need some treatment or Iv infusions to stay healthy

At least you need about 2.5 litres of water daily..

DOES THE SIZE OF MY BREAST DETERMINE THE AMOUNT OF BREASTMILK IT WILL PRODUCE?

Midwife Sally, my breast is small and can’t produce enough breastmilk for my baby.

The simple answer is that the amount of breastmilk produced produced by a lactating mum is not dependent on the size of the breast.

All things being equal, the more you allow baby to suck, the more breastmilk will be produced. The size of the breast does not matter

Feeding baby on demand helps more breastmilk to be produced. Lactating mums can do exclusive breastfeeding regardless of the size of their breast

Lactating mums should take more fluids, beverages and soups to stay healthy.

Initiation of breastfeeding should also be started within the first hour of the baby’s life .

If you still have challenges with breastfeeding kindly see a lactational consult, midwife or your pediatrician

Never worry about your breast size. It’s enough to feed your baby!

STAGES OF LABOR – A MUST KNOW

“I was having contractions and having the urge to push but the midwife insisted I wasn’t fully dilated and so I should hold on as she continued to give me a sacral massage”

There are three stages you go through when it comes to labor. You may be having pains and contractions but then your cervix may not be fully dilated.

1. The first stage of labor

In this stage the cervix which is the opening of the uterus opens from 1cm to 10cm. The opening of the cervix is as a result of adequate contractions. Pushing through an undiluted cervix can tear.. It may take about 6 to 18 hours or less depending on the mums parity and several factors

2. The second stage of labor

The cervix is fully dilated and baby can pass through the birth canal without any tear or damage to the cervix

3. The third stage of labor

During the third stage of labor the placenta which was the main connection to the mother is also delivered. Report if after the birth of your placenta you are experiencing severe bleeding

To have a smooth delivery. You need to be prepared for it. Cooperate with your midwife and doctor as well.
