HOW TO IDENTIFY THAT THE BABY IN UTERO IS IN DISTRESS

fetal distress

Have you been in that situation when your doctor or midwife tells you the baby is in distress and needs immediate interventions to save its life?

This is what it means. Your baby is not receiving enough oxygen from the placenta and so baby begins to struggle for life

Several factors and conditions can lead to fetal distress. Placenta abruptio, infections, preeclampsia, diabetes and many more

These are the signs that shows that your baby may be in distress

  • Meconium stained liquor. Water around the baby looks greenish. Baby starts to pass stool in utero and even inhales it. Leading to respiratory distress
  • Baby’s movement will be slow or excessive. Be familiar with your baby’s movement
  • You may be bleeding
  • Sometimes you start to experience unusual cramps
  • When your baby’s heart rate is checked it will be above 160bpm or below 120 bpm.

If you experience any of these early interventions are needed to save your baby.

MY BIRTH STORY – THE DECISION I TOOK SAVED THE LIFE OF MY BABY.

Newborn with cord

EDD 16th and 9th of July.

God’s own Time 26/06/2024

God was faithful throughout my pregnancy journey, I was well throughout without complications

At week 32 my baby was lying on the transverse, so I was asked by my midwife to see the doctor, which I did.

The Doctor examined me and kept me on weekly check up which I obeyed, so at week 37 he asked me to repeat a scan, if the baby hasn’t turned he will turn it himself, but I quickly requested for CS instead because my first pregnancy I lost the baby at birth so I didn’t want to take chances.

But I repeated the scan and it showed the baby was now at cephalic presentation.

But I still insisted on the CS because of my past experience and also within me I wasn’t just comfortable with Vaginal birth.

The Doctor asked me to go home and return on Wednesday for the CS.

On Wednesday I was taken to the theater and in the process of the operation they realized that the baby was coming out with BUTTOCKS and with a CORD around the NECK.

The decision I took became a divine timing for my baby to be saved. They were able to bring the baby out alive and we are both doing well. The doctors were so happy for me for insisting on CS.

Midwife Sally God bless you so much, because of your teaching on CS I wasn’t afraid to make that decision on CS, which ended up saving my baby’s life.

I pray God sees all pregnant women through.

crowning

CROWNING – AN IMPORTANT PHASE DURING THE SECOND STAGE OF LABOR

CROWNING – AN IMPORTANT PHASE DURING THE SECOND STAGE OF LABOR

This is when you can see the top of your baby’s head through the opening of your vagina.

This occurs during the second stage of labor when cervix is fully dilated.

The continues contractions and maternal efforts will aid the birth of the new born

It’s an exciting time for the midwife and the client

Some midwives will even announce this to the mum to give her more hope that baby is just about to be born

She may even be allowed to touch the babies head to confirm it

At this time you need to cooperate with your doctor or midwife for the best outcome

Depending on the situation they may decide whether the mum need an episiotomy or not

The midwife will also make her observation and examination, just to make sure there is no cord that is preceding the head as the pressure on the cord at this time can cut off blood supply to the baby leading to fetal distress.

At any point during the birth process communicate all your feelings to your doctor or midwife.

folic acid

BENEFITS OF TAKING FOLIC ACID DURING PREGNANCY

This week, I read a news report about a young woman who had sued her mum’s gynecologist for not advising the mum to take folic acid. This has resulted in her having birth defects which she believes could have been prevented if her mother was advised to take folic acid. Source (BBC News)

Folic acid is a B vitamin. It’s available in some foods. Example legumes, citrus fruits, green leafy vegetables, eggs etc

During pregnancy, folic acid helps form the neural tube.

It can help prevent some major birth defects of the baby’s brain (anencephaly) and spine (spina bifida).

It can help prevent many other congenital abnormalities. Do take your folic acid no matter your health condition during pregnancy.

Don’t risk your pregnancy. Don’t assume you are eating well and so you won’t take it. If you don’t feel way find a way of taking it

Take the prescribed dose by your doctor

FALSE PREGNANCY

YOU CAN LOOK PREGNANT BUT NOT PREGNANT – FALSE PREGNANCY

FALSE PREGNANCY
FALSE PREGNANCY

Have you heard many stories of women who say they have been pregnant for years and so on… If yes let’s have this explanation

First of all the most reliable confirmation that you are pregnant is when a heart beat is seen during a scan. There is another method not popularly used

There are so many reasons you could feel or look pregnant but in reality you are not.

Certain health conditions and hormonal imbalance can make you feel tired, sick, nauseated etc. You need to check and confirm pregnancy before concluding it pregnancy.

Also you can have a big abdomen due to abdominal fat, fluid, gas, mass etc

Never conclude you are pregnant because of how you feel or just because you missed a period.

Though some may be harmless some conditions can also need immediate intervention to prevent further complications

And yes I have also heard of stories where women were told they were not pregnant but found out they were actually pregnant later. If you find your self in this situation, seek a second opinion from another facility. Don’t stay home!

WHEN WOMEN BECOME VULNERABLE

WHEN WOMEN BECOME VULNERABLE!!

Moments when I love midwifery practice; when a new baby is born and when I find myself in the centre of issues that affect women .

The worst moments when men who are seen as the family heads and also decision makers take decisions that are detrimental to the well being of their partners.

Calling for the discharge of women who are pregnant and sick against medical advise. These vulnerable , sick and poor women will give in because they actually have to depend on them for everything therefore if the decision will even cause harm to them, they have no say.

Most of these cases come back to our facilities worse of and even causes death for some women. Some men will even pretend to be sending the women to close facilities and keep this vulnerable women at home.

The question I ask myself is it greed, poverty, selfishness, illiteracy or what can make some men so insensitive to the plight of women.

We need change! The life of every woman counts. Men get involved in maternal health , understand our issues and help reduce the needless deaths.

How can a husband or partner keep a woman he loves at home when she is suffering from severe preeclampsia and has been referred to a higher facility. If this woman dies who will be blamed?

We still have a long way to go. Remembering how I helped save a young woman who was very sick and partner wanted to take her to the northern part of the country .After a long and tough deliberation he changed his mind and the life of this young lady was saved.

She could have had serious complications on her way since they were not going with ambulance or any health personnel.

Well after that incidence, similar incidence kept repeating it self and I kept asking my self when will all these end?

When will society place value on the health of women? When will women be empowered enough to take decisions that affect their own reproductive health? Hoping for better days ahead.

Let’s empower our women both economically and psychologically. Yes it’s possible end Maternal deaths.

TEARS

REDUCING TEARS DURING DELIVERY

That moment every mum expects

When babys head becomes visible and doesn’t go back any longer

You know you are almost through

Your midwife will encourage you to bear down with your last energy

Tears can be prevented if you had already prepared your perineum with a

  • perineal massage,
  • Kegels exercise
  • Pelvic tilts
  • Squats etc

During the birth cooperate with your midwife

Assume a position that will open your pelvis widely and reduce tears and complications

Also speak to your midwife about how you can prevent perineal tears

#Crowning is often referred to as the “ring of fire” in the birthing process. It’s when your baby’s head becomes visible in the birth canal after you’ve fully dilated. It’s the home stretch — in more ways than

EXTERNAL CEPHALIC VERSION

Usually done for clients with breech presentation so baby can turn into the right position for vaginal delivery

It needs highly skilled person to perform procedure

It’s also done under strict monitoring and observation as seen in the video.

It’s sad that in some of our rural communities, women go to untrained persons when they are told they have breech presentations.

They do this procedure without any monitoring device.

Clients end up having complications like placenta Abruptio, shock and subsequently death.

If diagnosed with breech, ask your doctor or midwife the position and exercise you can do to help the baby turn into the right position.

Avoid dangerous procedures that can lead to serious complications

Also cooperate with your doctor when it comes to your mode of delivery

THE MULTIPAROUS WOMAN- WHY DOCTORS/MIDWIVES ENCOURAGE PLANNING YOUR FAMILY SIZE

Yes we all agree children are gifts from God and we love to have them.

But come to think of it it. What’s the point having many children and not being in a position to take care of these children or give them a better life

Whats the point of not limiting the number of children you can have and getting complications that may even cost your life at the expense of the other children that will be left behind

Lets go straight to the point. The #womb which carries your baby can be compared to the balloon. The more it’s inflated the more weaker it gets with time.

What this means is that especially after 3 or 4 children your risk of having uterine rapture or bleeding increases. This is because your uterine muscles has been over stretched and its ability to contract diminishes.

It’s important that after you have the required number of children at a point you need to take precautions so you don’t get pregnant again just to avoid complications or save your life.

In case you have more than three children and pregnant again. Please don’t take chances. Work closely with your doctor or midwife

Seek individualised care and report early if you have any complications

pregnant woman hungry

IS IT NORMAL TO ALWAYS FEEL HUNGRY DURING PREGNANCY?

 pregnant woman hungry

Yes during pregnancy its normal to feel hungry within very short intervals

You should not wait to get hungry before eating

Your tummy should never be empty

When you get hungry, nausea also increases and you become very uncomfortable.

Always eat on time and take fruits, vegetables and small chops in between your meals to stay healthy.

Speak to your midwife or doctor if you have issues with your nutrition.
