The cervix is the opening of the uterus.
It closes during pregnancy and firm to prevent the fetus from coming out.
For some women due to some birth defects, previous surgery or D&C on the cervix. Cervix is weak and a cerclage has to be done to prevent the cervix from opening.
This is usually done during the second trimester when cervix is likely to open due to the weight of the baby.
It can be diagnosed earlier by your doctor through a scan or done if you had previous history of frequent miscarriages. A threatened abortion can also alert your doctor to investigate further if you need a cerclage.
Women with cerclage are usually advised to reduce activity to prevent pressure on the cerclage.
Strict personal hygiene is also key. Infection cause problems and you need to do all in your power to stay clean
If you have contractions or lower abdominal pains report immediately.
Before labor sets in cerclage will be removed so baby can come out. You don’t have to be contracting while cerclage is in situ.
If your waters break, you bleed or have abnormal vaginal discharge, report immediately.
