YOUR PLACENTA AFTER BIRTH

After birth a woman quarrels with the midwife. Give me my placenta!!!

Midwife… You didn’t tell me you want it. If you did, I would have separated it for you to send it home. I added it to all other placentas since we have a way of keeping it and disposing it.

There are several beliefs that surround the placenta. For some it has to be buried in your home, some have rituals they do for the baby.

For some it can be encapsulated and eaten. Used for treating anemia or preventing postpartum depression

For some of us without any belief we just live it at the hospital for it to be disposed of.

If you have something to do with your baby’s placenta. Write it in your birth plan how you want it to be handled after it is birthed

You may be told to bring a labeled container so they put it in after birth.

If you have not written it in your birth plan. On the day of delivery or cesarean section, tell your midwife so they can put it in a container for you.

It should also be known that it is highly vascular and has to be treated with utmost care. Infection prevention techniques should be used in handling the placenta.

Always remember you have a choice how your placenta should be treated after birth. Only communicate effectively with your birth attendants to prevent misunderstanding.
